Ready to Celebrate: Fall 2024 Pinning and Commencement Ceremonies

Faculty and staff will gather with fall Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates and their families for the college's traditional pinning ceremony. The event will take place on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 5 p.m., in the College of Nursing Auditorium on the Boca Raton campus. The ceremony signifies the completion of the nursing program and the official initiation into the profession.
Florida Atlantic University will host its fall commencement ceremony for College of Nursing students on Friday, Dec. 13 at 9 a.m., in the Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium, located in the Student Union on the Boca Raton campus.

Aesthetics in Caring Science Exhibit | |
The Aesthetics in Caring Science Exhibit held in November showcased the breadth of creative talents made by College of Nursing Accelerated BSN and Freshman Direct Admit students. From creative projects in digital and performing arts, to paintings, sculptures and posters—and even some baked goods—guests and visitors enjoyed a first-hand look at nursing through a new lens. DNP Project Presentation Day | |
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students presented their scholarly projects during a poster presentation on Dec. 9 in the college Atrium and Rooms 201 and 202. Their projects, ranging from palliative care, Parkinson’s disease symptoms to skin cancer prevention, can influence policy and education in addition to serving as a platform for knowledge exchange, professional development and the advancement of nursing practice.

The College of Nursing launched an updated website design on Dec. 9. The new template reflects Florida Atlantic's recent brand refresh and several features, including navigation and mobile compatibility, are user-friendly for students, faculty, staff and visitors to the website. Student Nurses' Association (SNA) representatives attended the Florida Nursing Students' Association (FNSA) conference Nov. 3-5 in Orlando, where they served as delegates and voted on resolutions. SNA academic advisor Herlie Bertrand was a member of the scholarship committee that awarded six scholarships in the amount of $500 each. View Photos

Members of Florida Atlantic’s Nurses Christian Fellowship student organization joined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk in West Palm Beach on Nov.16 to celebrate, honor and remember those touched by blood cancers. Funds raised provide lifesaving research, advocacy and support for blood cancer patients and their families.

Save the date! The College of Nursing Career Fair will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the nursing building. The fair is a great opportunity for students to practice answering interview questions, network with clinical partners and meet with Florida Atlantic Career Center advisors to assist with career management needs. There will also be a photo booth set up to take professional photos.

Student Spotlight: Making a Global Impact | |
As part of the college's study abroad program, nurse practitioner students and faculty embarked on a transformative mission in November to Guatemala. They traveled to rural communities, including Santa Maria de Jesus, Sacatepéquez, and Los Magueyes, San Martin Jilotepeque, where they conducted cervical cancer screenings and provided essential health care services to over 120 patients. “Our students are energetic and engaged, fine-tuning their skills and caring deeply for the people of Guatemala,” shared faculty leader Dr. Nancy Harris. Alumna Spotlight: Wilna Justilien '22 | |
Alumna Wilna Justilien graduated magna cum laude from the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing with her Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) degree in 2022. She now works as an RN at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston. Every day, she is grateful she chose to study at Florida Atlantic University.
“Even though I’m working in the field now, I can still hear my professors’ voices in my head,” said Justilien. “I’m thankful for my teachers who were hard on me, and I’m immensely grateful for it. I appreciate my professors now even more because they trained us so well. I’m so proud to be a Florida Atlantic graduate.”
In her spare time, Justilien gives back to her alma mater. This fall, Justilien became the co-chair of the college’s Nursing Alumni Network. She aims to grow some of the seminars, educational workshops and social events for the college. Read More

Nursing Faculty Appointed to Prestigious Advisory Board | |
Dr. Candy Wilson was appointed to the Geneva Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board. During the two-year appointment, her responsibilities include advising on research priorities and innovations, facilitating collaborations with key researchers and stakeholders and supporting Geneva’s advocacy efforts across various levels of leadership within the Department of Defense and Congress.

Associate Professor Dr. Lenny Chiang-Hanisko and Interim Dean Dr. Patricia Liehr presented their research on how older adults bounced back from COVID-19 to Abbey Delray South residents on Nov. 12. They shared valuable insights from surveys highlighting the capacity of seniors to overcome obstacles associated with the pandemic.

During the Nursing Consortium of Florida conference on Nov. 14, Dr. Lenny Chiang-Hanisko delivered a poster presentation on caring theory and clinical practice. Other faculty attended the event in Pembroke Pines, and the college sponsored a table to share information about Florida Atlantic's nursing programs.

Dr. Alice Brumley served as a panelist on the "Preparing for the Silver Tsunami" as part of the South Florida Regional Planning Council event on Nov. 15. Dr. Brumley discussed health care challenges for older adults, including accessibility, long-term care and community support systems.

Dr. Debra Hain was named the national director for the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). In her role, she will provide oversight, set association direction, engage in strategic thinking, support ANNA’s mission and vision and strategic plan and establish association values.

Caring science scholars and faculty from the College of Nursing participated as speakers at the Watson Caring Science Institute’s Caritas Community Conference in Deerfield Beach Nov. 13-15. The college and The Anne Boykin Institute for the Advancement of Caring in Nursing were among the event's sponsors.

Dr. Armiel Suriaga and his team are preparing to submit their report to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for their core competency pilot project on "Combating substance use and the opioid epidemic." The group is scheduled to have a final convening with NAM in Washington, D.C. on Dec.19.
