Embracing the Holiday Season with Joy and Care

A message from NASW CEO, Dr. Anthony Estreet

As we approach the holiday season, I want to acknowledge the joy and warmth that this time of year brings for many. It’s a season for celebrating with loved ones, reflecting on our accomplishments, and recharging for the year ahead.

I also want to recognize that the holidays can be a difficult time for some. Whether due to personal struggles, loss, or other challenges, this time of year may bring up feelings that are hard to navigate. We must remember to be kind and compassionate to ourselves and others. A simple smile, a kind word, or a listening ear can make all the difference. Together, we can continue to create a supportive and understanding environment that honors the diversity of experiences people may be going through.

While the holidays bring many reasons to smile, taking time for self-care is just as important. Please prioritize your mental and emotional well-being, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support. Remember, we are here for each other.

As we start to close and wrap up this year, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made, the connections we’ve strengthened, and the growth that’s come through both challenges and successes as One Association. I’m excited to continue our journey into the new year together.

I wish you all a peaceful, joyful, and restful holiday season. Take care of yourselves, and let’s make the most of this time to recharge for what’s ahead!

NASW-MO Readying for 2025 Session, Looking at Narrow SW Supervision Change

The election is now past, and NASW-MO is preparing for 2025. Pre-filing of bills in the Missouri General Assembly begins December 1, 2024. We will have a much clearer idea of what to expect once the bills begin stacking up. Of course, we do understand much about the environment we will be working within.

If you want to know more about what to expect in Jefferson City in 2025, please join NASW-MO on the Free Virtual training, “2025 Session Preview” on Wednesday, December 11, 12p-1p. “As we approach the 2025 legislative session in January, you will learn about the political climate within the Legislature as well as major issues that are on the horizon. This will include an overview of the state's budget and the implications for health and human services.” (You can register HERE.)

The Importance of Self-Care for Social Workers

By LeAnn Lawlor, LMSW

Social workers play a crucial role in supporting individuals, families and communities often dealing with challenging situations and complex emotions. As we all know, the nature of our work can lead to burnout and compassion fatigue if self care practices are not prioritized.

Your Inspiration for the Month

December is a month that can be beautiful and harsh. It can be full of family or bitterly lonely. It can be a time of warmth by a hearth or freezing in poverty. So this month, I felt like bringing a little extra Inspiration. Read them both or one or the other. The FIRST Inspiration of the Month is “December” by Matthew Zapruder which is a harsh, narrow poem. It cuts and heals at once, something like a scalpel, but full of modern (2019) brooding. If this season feels dark to you, find companionship with Zapruder. The SECOND Inspiration is “The Snow Fairy” by Claude McKay. McKay, a giant of the Harlem Renaissance, brings a light and effervescent poem to us that smiles slyly at the wonders of winter. Written in the style of the English Romantics, it feels like the kind of thing you want to sip hot chocolate to and watch snow fall. I couldn’t resist either poem. All I know is that I needed beauty—the sparse and the sparkling.
