In September of 2024 LCEDC was appointed by the LaGrange County Commissioners to oversee the implementation of LaGrange County Together, our countywide comprehensive plan. The finalized plan included seventy-five recommendations organized around five topics of community interest – Land Use and Development, Local Economy, Natural Environment, Roadways and infrastructure, and Quality of Life, and was developed with a great deal of community engagement and input.
Today, we’ll share a birds eye view update with you on LaGrange County Together and all of the work that has gone into accomplishing the goals in our comprehensive plan since it was adopted two years ago:
- 20 of the 75 action items have been accomplished:
- LaGrange County Zoning held 26 public meetings to aid in the composition and adoption of a new Unified Development Ordinance for our county. This document replaced outdated plans that were adopted in 2005. The new UDO provides a set of guidelines for building and development in the county’s unincorporated areas and seeks to protect property values, preserve natural resources and promote economic development in LaGrange County and is administered by the county’s Zoning Administrator Robbie Miller.
- We have active Main Street/Community Development or revitalization efforts happening all over the county. Main Street LaGrange, Topeka Together, Wolcottville Community Initiative, Shipshewana Retail Merchants Association, South Milford Community League, Mongo Community Development Association, and Howe Community Association (to name a few) are all doing amazing work in their communities. If you’re interested in getting involved – reach out! We would love to connect you!
- A higher wheel tax was implemented allowing for additional funds to be allocated to the repair and maintenance of our county roads, and we’ve really seen the difference! For additional information concerning road repairs and maintenance or any questions, please reach out to the county highway department at 260-499-6353.
- A new and diverse tourism strategy has been implemented and projects to help drive our tourists South and East in the county are well underway. These efforts will provide a positive economic impact throughout the county!
- The LaGrange County Community Foundation and LaGrange County Trails have collaborated to compose a Master Trails Plan for the County, and are actively pursuing funding for the implementation of the Hawpatch Trail.
- LaGrange County REMC has continued their connectivity work and are serving over 3,000 homes with broadband
- The establishment of a new career pathway for LaGrange County High School students interested in manufacturing is in development and set to launch in 2026
- Work on a countywide historic inventory is underway
- And so much more…..
- An additional 25 of the action items are currently in progress with active meetings and conversations taking place around their implementation
- The remaining items in the plan have been reviewed with plans for additional meetings and work to begin just after the first of the year.
For any questions about the comprehensive plan and our progress, please reach out to Emilee at ebuller@lagrangecountyedc.com or
