Council Update

We had two Council Meetings in November, these are some of the items we took action on:

  • City Council approved Amendment No. 3 to the Property Use Agreement with the San Diego Rescue Mission to lease the Oceanside Navigation Center shelter located at 3131 Oceanside Boulevard, extending the term for one-year, for the purpose of operating a 50-bed facility for the unsheltered; and authorize the City Manager to execute the amendment upon receipt of all supporting documents. City Council: Motion to approve staff's recommendation with the exception of using Oceanside instead of North County. Result: Approved 5-0. Enactment No: 24-D0612-1.

  • City Council took the following actions related to RE:BEACH Oceanside Pilot Project Siting: 1) Received information about the multi-criteria siting analysis and associated public outreach, and concur with staff’s recommendation to select Segment 1, along and seaward of The Strand between Tyson Street Park and Wisconsin Avenue, as the RE:BEACH pilot project location. 2) Authorized staff to proceed with final design, engineering and environmental compliance tasks, with the Phase 2 Sand Nourishment and Retention Pilot Project sited in Segment 1. Result: Approved 5-0.

Our next City Council meeting will be on Wednesday, Dec. 4th, 2024 at 5:00pm.

Getting Out in the Community in November

At the beginning of the month I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Solutions for Change 25th Anniversary Gala. I really enjoyed attending this event and hearing stories from those who have graduated the program, it was truly inspiring. If you missed the event this year, be sure to attend next year! Solutions for Change does incredible work in our community, and communities nearby, without public funding. Events like the Annual Gala help fund this great work!

Last month, Cox Communications hosted a tour of their Oceanside facilities for North County elected officials to attend. I learned a ton about the telecommunications industry and the innovative work Cox is doing in this region. Additionally, I partnered with Cox to host a Digital Equity Event at the El Corazon Senior Center on the same day! We had digital safety expert, Jon Moffat, give a presentation and answer questions from attendees. We received excellent feedback and will be hosting another class soon! Be on the look out for more information!

The City recently held a swearing in ceremony for the new Oceanside Police Chief, Taurino Valdovinos. Chief Valdovinos has been with the Oceanside Police Department since 2003. He has held various roles across the department, including positions in patrol, neighborhood policing, gang suppression, and undercover work in the Special Enforcement Section as a court-certified gang expert. He has also served as a SWAT team member and Force Options Training Simulator instructor. Congratulations Chief Valdovinos, Osiders are in good hands!

With students going back to school, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce recently resumed their Rising Star Student of the Month Awards! This is one of my favorite events to attend every month. I always leave feeling inspired by the incredible stories of our students who excel in their studies despite significant adversity. Congratulations to the students who were recognized: Chevy Plasencia of Surfside Academy, Isabella Gomez of Oceanside High School, Ashley Leon Fraticelli of El Camino High School, Paige Mejia of Coastal Academy High School, and Carlos Salzar Cruz of Pacific View Charter.
