Topical flea and tick treatments are common for pets, but the latest research is showing that they could be unsafe for our homes, our furry friends, and our water. The Department of Pesticide Regulation of the California Environmental Protection Agency published research in 2023 that demonstrated the hazards that fipronil, an active ingredient in flea and tick treatments, can pose to human and animal health.
Fipronil also makes its way into wastewater from handwashing and bathing pets, and most treatment plants are not equipped to remove it from the water. This can in turn lead to aquatic life being exposed to a harmful substance as well. One preventative step that you can take is to ask your veterinarian if oral medication for flea and tick prevention is an option for your pet.
