December: What's New

Balanced and Brave Workshop Inspires Caregivers

“Before, I felt like ‘What’s wrong with them?’ Now I’m wondering, ‘What’s going on for them?’ That shift alone has changed our evenings.”

- Balanced and Brave workshop participant

This fall, several families from across our community took part in a new workshop series offered by our Mental Health team. Balanced & Brave: Brain-Based Parenting for Big Behaviors became a supportive space for parents and caregivers looking to move away from constant battles for control and toward parenting rooted in connection, compassion, and what we now know from neuroscience.

In her latest blog, Encompass Pediatric Therapy Director Megan Walsh shares that at the heart of Balanced and Brave is a simple truth: Children grow best when they feel safe, seen, and supported. When adults understand how the brain and nervous system really work, parenting becomes less about stopping outbursts and more about building relationships that help both parent and child feel connected.

Encompass Annual Report - See What We Accomplished Together

Early in 2025, we shared a meaningful shift for Encompass, moving from a mission statement to a purpose statement: To improve the well-being of children by partnering with families and the community.

We hope you will take a moment to enjoy our 2024-2025 Annual Report and see how, with your support and partnership, we are honoring that purpose.

Like last year, our Annual Report offers an engaging, interactive experience. Simply click on bolded words or featured icons, and you will be linked to an article, video, podcast, or our website for an opportunity to learn more or see our work in action.

While the Encompass purpose has evolved, our vision remains constant: A community where ALL children thrive. We are filled with gratitude for your partnership in sharing this vision. Together, we will create a stronger, healthier community.

Library2Go Visit to Our Early Learning Center

Once a month, the King County Library System (KCLS) Library2Go bookmobile visits our Early Learning Center in North Bend.

All students are invited to select their own book to enjoy in the classroom, and our teachers have an opportunity to boost their classroom libraries.

The bookmobile visit is just one aspect of our robust partnership with KCLS that also

includes classroom story time visits and Carnation preschool field trips for stories, music, and movement at the library.

Preschool Open House Sessions

Enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is just around the corner.

If you are looking for an enriching preschool experience for your child, we invite you to attend one of our upcoming Open House sessions at our North Bend Early Learning Center.

ParentChild+ is Enrolling!

Participants in our 2-year ParentChild+ program receive 92 visits from their Early Learning Specialist, along with 24 books and 22 toys, as well as craft and learning extension activities. Through parent coaching, caregivers learn to use these tools in ways that help prepare children for school. By engaging in activities that foster vocabulary, pre-literacy skills, and social-emotional development, ParentChild+ graduates are 50 percent more likely to be prepared for kindergarten than their socio-economic peers and have a 30 percent higher graduation rate.

Now Enrolling!

The Encompass ParentChild+ program serves families living within the boundaries of the Snoqualmie Valley, Riverview, and Issaquah School Districts. Children must be between 16 months and 30 months old at the time of enrollment. The program is offered in both English and Spanish, and eligibility is determined by income, age, and other factors.

Salish Lodge & Spa Tree Lighting

It was a beautiful evening for the annual Salish Lodge & Spa tree lighting. Encompass Executive Director Nela Cumming had the opportunity to share a few words before our 2025 Encompass Gala family speakers, Mindy and Spencer Kabelac, and their daughter Lottie, pulled the lever to light up the tree. People brought their holiday shopping lists, and the Salish generously contributed 20 percent of the proceeds from sales in the Country Store. Thank you to the Salish Lodge & Spa. We are so honored by the opportunity to participate in this special event each year.

Duvall Drop-in Playgroup Begins in January

Beginning Monday mornings in January, Encompass will offer a new drop-in toddler playgroup opportunity in Duvall.

Offered by our Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) team, this fun and supportive playgroup is designed for kids 18 months to 3 years, and their caregivers. Our group is an inclusive space for children of all abilities and developmental levels to explore, play, and learn together, and will include a parent-led discussion circle, facilitated by a child development specialist. No registration required. Join us! Learn more at the link below.

Embracing Commitment to Excellence

Thanksgiving week often brings changes to the Encompass Pediatric Therapy Clinic’s schedule, as many families are engaged in holiday plans and travel. This can result in lighter therapy sessions during this period, creating gaps in the therapy schedule. This year, our Pediatric Therapy team turned those days into a mini conference, providing an opportunity for therapists to attend valuable learning sessions when they had availability in their schedules.

Each one-hour session was rooted in practical strategies, hands-on learning, and the shared experience of supporting kids with diverse needs. The feedback from participants painted a clear picture that the time was well spent. A small handful of their key takeaways:

  • A deeper understanding of how to move up and down developmental capacities
  • Practical sensory strategies they could apply immediately
  • More awareness of auditory discrimination needs
  • Increased intentionality around building rapport across sessions
  • Confidence in joining a child’s play, even when the interest is unfamiliar
  • Greater sensitivity to heightened sensory profiles
  • Using declarative language and getting down on a child’s level
  • Great use of time for employees to continue learning in a relaxed environment.

By investing in professional development on days that might otherwise feel fractured or unproductive, Encompass turned “found time” into cultivated time for growth, collaboration, and renewed energy.

Encompass Winter Break Closure

All Encompass sites will be closed beginning Thursday, December 25, through Thursday, January 1. The Child Development Center will resume clinic services with normal hours on Friday, January 2, 2025. Preschool and toddler groups will begin the week of January 5, 2025.

We wish everyone a safe, joyful, and restful winter break!

The need is growing. Sustained financial support ensures we can be there for every child who needs us. A recurring gift—whether it’s $25 a month or $250 a quarter—helps Encompass provide life-changing programs and resources all year long.

Valued Support from The Summit at Snoqualmie

Over the past few years, The Summit at Snoqualmie has been making upgrades to its network of chairlifts. In order to make way for new lifts, they found a fun and creative way to get rid of the old chairs and support local youth-focused organizations at the same time - a chair auction! Community members have been happy participants in each auction, keen to own a bit of Summit history - all for a good cause.

Encompass has been a fortunate recipient in each of these chairlift auctions with thousands of dollars donated in support of our programs and services for children and families.

Thank you to The Summit at Snoqualmie for your partnership in our vision of a community where ALL children thrive!
