2026 Region Budget

I would like to inform residents that the 2026 Region budget was adopted on December 11th, following public budget meetings that were held on November 20, 27, December 4 and 11th. The overall property tax impact is 3.6% (1.55% for Region services, 2.01% for Peel Police, and 0.05% for other agencies). This increase might be further reduced as there are some other adjustments that might be taking place.

As you may know from my previous update, the Region was initially proposing an increase of 4.5%, and I played an active role in reducing the Region budget and tax impact to 3.6% for 2026.

As you may also recall, the Region’s increase last year was 5.9%, and 4.6% of that was for Peel Police funding. I voted against the 2025 Region budget as I could not support the proposed level of increase for taxpayers.

As your Councillor, it is always my top priority to keep tax increases to a minimum for residents and businesses. I have always worked hard to do this every year at the City and Region, and I played an active role in reducing the Region budget and tax impact for 2026. Before the 2026 budget process began, I brought forward a motion at Regional Council on July 10th to direct Staff to find 2% budget savings for each Region department. For the 2026 budget, I brought forward and supported several motions at the Region to decrease the Region budget. I brought forward a motion to remove some Region waste management events and initiatives; and a motion to reduce the economic adjustment compensation for non-union Region employees. I also voted to support a motion from Councillor Tedjo to withhold the $12.4 million Peel Police Community Safety Levy for 2026; a motion from Councillor Damerla to reduce the Region Infrastructure Levy by 0.5%; and a motion from Mayor Parrish to remove $4.75 million from the 2026 budget.

Highlights of the 2026 Region budget are as follows:

·        A capital investment of $1.9 billion to support infrastructure, water supply and wastewater

·        The addition of 175 Peel Police officers and 25 civilian professionals to address growing community needs, increasing complexity of crime and community safety

·        Investing $38 million for enhancements and state of good repair for ambulances, other paramedic fleet, and ambulance equipment

·        Adding 40 paramedics to support a growing and aging population, increased call volumes, and to manage system pressures

·        Investing $203.9 million in capital for state of good repair for Peel Living, Community Housing Providers loans, and Peel owned shelters and buildings

·        Continuing to implement the Peel Community Housing Development Program with a capital investment of $16.5 million

·        Ensuring safe and sustainable wraparound care at the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor with a $3.3 million investment

·        A capital investment of $341.3 million for road construction, intersection improvements, and active transportation

As you may know from my previous update, we will be discussing the 2026 City budget in January, and the City’s preliminary forecast is around 3.38%. I am still not happy with this proposed increase, and I will be working hard to find ways to bring this increase down during the City budget process, as I did during the Region budget process.

I strongly encourage you to participate in the City budget process and provide your comments. The proposed 2026 Budget will be available online on January 6, 2026. To ask questions or provide comments, attend one of the following City Budget Committee meetings:

·        Monday, January 12 at 9:30 a.m.

·        Tuesday, January 13 at 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

·        Monday, January 19 and Tuesday, January 20 (if required) at 9:30 a.m.

·        Wednesday, January 28 at 9:30 a.m. – Council approval of any proposed amendments to the 2026 Budget

You will need to submit a request to speak at a meeting. Or share your comments through email at budget@mississauga.ca. All budget committee meetings will be live streamed

Coming 2026 – New Recycling Provider for Peel

Starting January 1, 2026, an organization called Circular Materials will manage recycling, instead of Peel Region. This change is part of a Provincial government mandate that shifts the responsibility of recycling operations and costs to producers; the companies that create packaging and paper.

Starting January 1, 2026:

·        Your recycling schedule and bin stay the same.

·        Peel Region will still collect garbage, organics, and yard waste.

·        For recycling bin and collection issues, contact GFL – Green For Life Environmental Inc. (the contractor hired to provide collection services) at:

Parking Tips During the Holiday Season

For drivers who are planning on being out and about in the city for shopping or visiting friends and family, here are a few things to keep in mind:

·        Extended parking on holidays

On-street parking on statutory holidays like Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day is allowed beyond the five-hour limit between 8 a.m. and midnight.

·        Overnight parking

For guests staying the night, a temporary parking permit from the City allows you to park on a residential street for longer than the standard five hours and during the prohibited period between 2 to 6 a.m. On days with heavy snowfall, rules around street parking and temporary/residential parking permits change as the City implements Citywide Winter Parking Restrictions

·        Parking during snow clearing

Vehicles parked on the road can prevent City crews from being able to clear roads and residential driveway windrows, making it difficult for emergency vehicles, public transit and residents to travel. To make snow clearing safer and more efficient, the City has introduced a penalty of $150 for those who park their vehicles on the road when the City is plowing and declares a Citywide Winter Parking Restriction.

School Streets Pilot Project

This spring, the City of Mississauga is looking to support up to three schools in Mississauga for the next round of the School Streets pilot project.

This is a free program that helps create a safe and community-friendly space for students to get to school. During drop-off and pick-up times, a small section of the street in front of the school will be temporarily closed to external traffic. This is the third round of the program following pilots in 2022 and 2025.

Selected schools will participate in a four-week pilot from May 4 – June 19, 2026, for one to five days each week. Depending on the success of the spring pilot, one school may have the option to extend the program for the full 2026-2027 school year.

The program is free, but space is limited. Applications are open until January 15, 2026. Learn more and apply now at: Mississauga.ca/schoolstreets.

Partners in Trade

Mississauga continues to back local businesses as U.S. trade challenges persist. Council recently reviewed progress on its Partners in Trade plan, which focuses on advocacy, procurement, and targeted business support to protect jobs and strengthen the city’s economy.

Despite ongoing tariffs affecting key sectors such as automotive, steel, and lumber, Mississauga attracted 47 new investments in 2025 worth $1.2 billion, creating 3,300 jobs. Through consultations with more than 100 business leaders, the City is shaping local priorities and urging federal action ahead of CUSMA’s 2026 review.

Mississauga has also applied for provincial funding to help small and medium-sized businesses diversify exports and build local supply chain resilience.

Taxi Fraud Investigations

Investigators with the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau have arrested and charged two Brampton men in connection with several alleged fake taxi fraud incidents that occurred throughout 2024 and 2025.

Investigators are reminding the public about the ongoing fake taxi scam. Members of the community are encouraged to take the following precautions:

·        Remain vigilant when approached by unknown individuals particularly during the holiday season

·        Know that legitimate taxi drivers will not refuse cash, and will not remove your card from sight or ask for your PIN

·        If circumstances present as unusual, trust your instincts, do not follow through with the transaction and report it to police

Anyone who believes they have fallen victim to this scam is asked to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 453-3311, ext. 3335. For more information about fraud and prevention tips, please visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Online Sale of Fraudulent GICs

Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau are issuing a public warning regarding an emerging trend involving the online sale of fraudulent Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs). Between 2022 and 2024, the Fraud Bureau received multiple complaints from members of the public who were deceived by fraudulent websites that appeared to be held by legitimate Canadian financial institutions.

The Fraud Bureau encourages the public to take the following precautions:

  • § Verify directly: Contact the financial institution using a publicly listed phone number to confirm investment offers before sending funds.
  • § Check the website URL: Look for spelling errors, unusual domain extensions, or anything inconsistent with the institution’s official site.
  • § Avoid forwarding funds to unfamiliar recipients: Financial institutions will not require transfers to unaffiliated accounts.
  • § Research investment rates: GIC interest rates that appear higher than the market average may be a red flag.

Investigators are urging anyone who believes they have fallen victim to this scam to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 453-3311 ext. 3335. For more information about fraud and prevention tips, please visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
