The Illinois Assistance for Aged, Blind, and Disabled (AABD) Cash assistance program is designed to help people over 65 and those with disabilities pay for their basic needs - housing, clothes, utilities, etc. Data shows this program is highly underutilized. For example, we recently asked the Illinois Department of Human Services how many single-person SNAP households receiving SSI also receive AABD Cash. For reasons we'll discuss in this training, the overwhelming majority of these individuals should qualify for AABD Cash. However, only 12% actually received it.
In this training, we'll discuss:
- What is AABD Cash?
- Who qualifies?
- How to maximize benefits from these programs?
- Common problems we encounter and how to address them
Please feel free to submit any questions you have on these topics before the training by emailing gmashon@legalaidchicago.org.
