Season’s Greetings to all! It truly felt like winter at last evening’s Holiday Celebration in Vassallo Park. With the Menorah on display, the Christmas Tree lit and a visit by Santa Claus himself, it was a great way to kick off the holiday season! I hope you will continue to celebrate the holidays in our Village by shopping local in our business districts and dining local at our great restaurants. In encouragement of that, I’m happy to share that the newly-organized Association of Businesses in Croton (ABC) will be running a holiday shuttle next weekend (December 13-14) and the Croton Business Council is resuming their successful What’s for Dinner Wednesdays program this month as well. Details on both programs can be found on the Village website.
Following much discussion this fall, the Village Board voted on December 1, 2025, to expand the residential parking permit system in the Harmon area to include all of Young Avenue, as well as Hastings Avenue between Oneida Avenue and Devon Avenue. Residents included in the permit area will shortly receive a letter explaining how to apply for the new permits. The permit system will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and non-residents will be allowed to park up to four hours at a time within the permit area. Some project updates as we approach the end of the year:
- The railing replacement project along the Route 9 Crossining Bridge walkway has been completed this week. The Village will be looking into some additional beautification efforts for the scenic outpost in the next budget year.
- Development of the plan to rehabilitate the Half Moon Bay Bridge continues with our structural engineer. A public information meeting is being scheduled for January 2026; a notice will be sent out once a date and time are confirmed.
- Dept. of Public Works crews completed the new parking area in front of the Washington Engine Firehouse this week. Final paving of the area will take place in spring 2026 once the weather gets warmer.
- The new Croton EMS addition to the Harmon Firehouse is on track to be completed by the end of the year. The lettering of the building recently took place and final touches are being made in the interior of the building before EMS relocates to the new part of the building.
- The food scrap recycling program has been relocated from Lot A to Lot G (near the salt shed) in the Croton-Harmon Train Station parking lot. Families currently on the waiting list should expect to be contacted in the near future as a larger shed has expanded capacity for the program.
Please remember to check the Projects and Initiatives page of the Village website for updates on various other work being done. These pages are updated regularly as more information becomes available.
Finally, a reminder that the Village of Croton-on-Hudson no longer serves as an assessing unit. All applications for tax exemptions, including renewals, should be filed with the Town of Cortlandt Assessor’s office beginning in January. Applications are due to the Town by May 1 of each year. Application forms can be found on the Village website.

Croton Free Library Community Food Pantry
The Croton Free Library has established a Community Food Pantry as a local resource where people find and donate nonperishable food and hygiene products. Anyone can take what they need, no questions asked and no paperwork. The Community Food Pantry is available for pickups and donations during the Library’s regular open hours.

Westchester Municipal Consortium Achieves Major Accomplishments in Con Edison Rate Case Settlement
The settlement includes major reductions in originally proposed rates.
Con Edison’s original proposed electric rate increase of 13.4% has been reduced to 2.8% on the total customer bill under the settlement. On the gas side, the original propose 19% increase has been reduced to 2% on the total customer bill. The agreement spans January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2028, with similar annual increases of approximately 2.8% (electric) and 2.0% (gas) in the second and third years. Holiday Gifts for History Lovers
The Historical Society offers a variety of Croton-themed items, such as T-shirts, note cards, tote bags, books, baseball hats, and a historical coverlet, at their office in the basement of the Municipal Building on Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Croton is a Dam Town T-shirts are also available for purchase in the main Village office on the second floor of the Municipal Building. Warning: Ongoing Phishing Email Alert
Several residents and professionals have received emails from "Village of Croton-on-Hudson Planning Division" and from the email address "planning.crotononhudson-ny.gov @ usa.com" with an invoice attachment requesting payment for services.
The Engineering Department never issues requests and will not accept fees/payments via wire transfer, ACH, or credit/debit card over the phone or by email. We ONLY accept cash/check in person, checks by mail, or credit/debit card in person.
Legitimate emails from the Village of Croton-on-Hudson will end with a “@crotononhudson-ny.gov” email address. To verify the legitimacy of an email, you may always call the Engineering Department at (914) 271-4783 or email engineering@crotononhudson-ny.gov.

Some Not-Snow-Fun Reminders...
A friendly reminder that the Village Code requires the clearing of snow and ice from the full width of the sidewalk 12 hours after the cessation of snowfall. The Village will declare an official end time to each storm, which will be posted on the Village website and social media. Residents can sign up to receive Snow Alerts via email by registering here.
In order to facilitate keeping our streets clear of snow and ice, no parking is allowed on any Village street when there is 2 or more inches of snow. For residents that have no viable off-street parking, Village municipal lots are available for parking. Seasonal hardship parking permits are also available for those who qualify. Hardship permit holders shall move their vehicles no later than 12 hours after the snow stops.

Greener Holiday Season
The holidays are a time for celebration, but they also come with extra waste. A few simple choices can make the season brighter and lighter on the planet.
Reduce: Cut back on disposable wrapping paper, since most of it can’t be recycled. Try fabric, brown paper, or reusable bags. Even better, give experiences instead of items: a class, a special outing, or a shared meal. Memories create far less waste than packaging.
Reuse: If you bring home a real tree, give it a second life after the decorations come down. The Village will collect trees curbside throughout January, turning them into mulch or compost rather than landfill waste. Before setting it out, you can also clip a few small branches to use as natural winter greenery around your home.
Recycle: Once the festivities end, take a quick recycling reality check. Cardboard boxes, plain wrapping paper, and glass bottles make the cut; glitter paper, ribbons, and tinsel don’t. Sorting properly helps keep tons of unnecessary waste out of landfills.
A few mindful choices add up and make the season feel more meaningful, too.

PROJECT MOVER: Success, Winter Hibernation and Expansion
Project MOVER, the regional bike share program, has been a big success in its premier season in the Village. Ridership figures now available through the end of October show that 1,088 Project MOVER rides were initiated in Croton from the July 9, 2025 launch date through October 31, 2025.
In addition, for the month of October, Croton had the most rides of any of the communities participating in the project, exceeding the ridership in the Village and Town of Ossining, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Dobbs Ferry. Also, in October, Croton’s train station parking lot was the busiest of all the hubs in the six Project MOVER communities.
The coldest months of the year will be a period of “hibernation” for Project MOVER. Bikes will be picked up and stored for the winter on December 19, 2025, with the first week in April 2026 as the target for their return.
When Project MOVER resumes in the spring, we will plan to expand the number of hubs from their current six to at least eight. Among the possibilities for expansion are Senasqua Park and north Riverside near the overpass. There will be outreach to the Croton community for thoughts on new hubs for Project MOVER.

Croton Lions Club Christmas Tree Sale

This major fundraiser supports college scholarships and local charities. Trees will be available on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and on weekdays from 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Proceeds go to supporting food for hungry families, scholarships for deserving students, the medical equipment loaner program, assistance for battered women, and funding for autistic children.

The Week That Won the War: The True Story of the Firing on The Vulture

On September 22, 1780 a cannonade was fired from Croton Point, then known as Tellers Point, on the British ship The Vulture. This action stranded British spymaster Major John André, which led to his capture and prevented Benedict Arnold’s plan to hand West Point over to the British. Read more here.
