Introducing New Hunger Action Advocate

Steven Sylvanus

North Central California Presbytery is pleased to welcome Elder Steve Sylvanus as our new Hunger Action Advocate.  Steve began his work December 1st, taking on this position after our previous HAA, Nancy Disher, resigned last summer.  Hunger Action Advocates (HAAs) serve presbyteries as educators, motivators, and facilitators of hunger action. They assist congregations and other groups to become engaged with issues of direct hunger relief, hunger-related development assistance, public policy advocacy, education and interpretation about hunger and lifestyle issues, including environmental justice. Steve is a member of Sierra Vista Community Church where he has been involved with a number of outreach ministries. He is a Marine Corps veteran and has worked in dining and kitchen services at Assisted Living Communities in Carmichael, CA.  He looks forward to learning about the many, varied ways our congregations are serving those experiencing food insecurity and finding ways for connection and collaboration. He will also keep Presbytery updated on opportunities to connect with the Presbyterian Hunger Program.

Holiday Office Hours

The Presbytery office will be closed from December 24th- January 1st, 2026 for the Christmas and New Year Holiday.

Beware Of Scams

Churches and other non-profits are increasingly targets of on-line scams. Scammers exploit the close ties that exist in these communities along with the generous nature of church members and leaders. Scams may come in the form of emails, texts, phone calls, or social media posts.

 Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Unexpected requests for money or gift cards

  • Messages with poor grammar or slightly altered email addresses

  • Urgent demands for immediate action--especially involving money

  • Requests for sensitive information (passwords, financial details, member records)

  • Links that direct you to unfamiliar or misspelled web addresses
  • Requests that discourage direct communication: (“I’m in a meeting, please do not call me but respond by email only…)

If something feels off, it probably is. If you have any question about whether a communication from Presbytery staff is genuine, please call the Presbytery office.

Changes To Presbytery Grants In 2026

Disbursing grants is one of the ways North Central California Presbytery supports our churches, pastors, and ministries. We have been blessed with financial resources to make this possible and we want to steward those resources faithfully. To create a process that fosters prayerful discernment by committees and equitable access by those seeking funding, NCCP is making two important changes to its grant making procedures in 2026.

  1. A Common Grant Application (Click Here For Application) All those seeking grant funding from one of our NCCP Committees will begin the process by filling out a common grant application. This will help ensure that those reviewing grant requests are receiving the same kind of information from all applicants. Committees may request supplemental information as needed. The form will also enable our staff to keep more accurate and readily accessible records of what grants have been approved and funded.
  2.  A Common Schedule for Grant Applications and Approvals: Committees considering grant applications need sufficient time to receive, review, and discuss these applications in order to make thoughtful decisions supported by prayer and holy conversation. Considering a number of grant applications on the same schedule also allows various committees to share information, collaborate as needed, and identify emerging needs. In 2026, Committees will review grant applications at their February, May, and October meetings. The deadline for applications will be the 1st of the month preceding grant reviews. (January 1, April 1, and September 1.) Emergency grant applications can be considered at any time.

Thank you to our Grants Task Force for developing the Common Grant Application and Grant Tracking spreadsheet. If you have any questions regarding these new processes, please ask any of our Presbytery staff.

Search Continues for
Young Adult Advisory Delegate!

Are you or do you know of a young adult who will be 18 - 23 as of June 22, 2026 (the start date)?

Interested in being an influencer at the General Assembly in Milwaukee, online starting June 22nd and in person on June 28th with the main expenses paid by the denomination? While the delegates do not have a vote, their collective votes on each overture (motion) are shown to the commissioners before they vote. YAADs also are assigned to a committee, participate in the discussions and have time together as a group.

We still have time to elect someone as the GA deadline for YAADs is now after our February meeting! The information below will help discern a possible call. Any person wishing to be nominated by their session needs to be available for the election on Saturday, February 7th via Zoom to share (up to one minute) the sense of call to be the YAAD at this time. If there is more than one nominee, the one with the most votes will be the delegate and the one with the second most votes will be the alternate.

The deadline for submitting the nomination form to me is January 28, 2026.

Poll For Presbytery Educational Workshop

The Presbytery will be holding a few educational workshops next year. Please vote for the best time frame to host these workshops. Workshops will be during the weekday.

A Healing And Dinner Evening At

Iama Embodied Ministries

It was 9:45 PM when I finally got to lock the church doors and go home. It was Thanksgiving evening, and 19 persons, including 5 first-timers, gathered in the social hall for food, games, conversations, and Reiki.

The event was advertised from five to eight, but when 8 o’clock rolled in, people didn’t seem to be rushing to leave… so I let them stay.

More food, more conversations, and lots of affirming moments and gratitude for having a place to be, whereas they would have been alone at home otherwise. And so would I!

My dream was to create a space where I had to kick people out to leave! And that’s the space we have!

Grateful for the opportunity to gather community and for your support to make that happen. As our motto says: we meet for a reason.

A Season of Gratitude:

NWC Leaders Celebrate 2025 Together

NWC Leaders and members of the NMI Committee came together for the final NWC leaders’ lunch fellowship of 2025 at Davis Community Church, filling the room with warmth, joyful conversation, and a spirit of gratitude. Together, we reflected on the year’s journey—the challenges we faced, the milestones we celebrated, and the many ways God worked among us. Stories of transformed lives, growing ministries, and answered prayers were shared, reminding us of God’s faithfulness and the strength we draw from community.

The fellowship was alive with laughter, encouragement, and connection. Leaders exchanged experiences, celebrated one another’s successes, and deepened the relationships that sustain our shared mission. Lunch, generously provided by Grace Moon of Mosaics, offered a perfect backdrop for conversation and fellowship, illustrating that ministry thrives not only in plans and programs but also in the genuine bonds we nurture along the way.

As the lunch fellowship came to a close, hearts were filled with gratitude and eyes turned toward the future. Inspired by the reflections and shared vision of the day, we stepped into the coming year with hope, trusting that God’s guidance and grace will continue to inspire our work, strengthen our ministries, and empower us to make a lasting impact in the communities we serve.

Immigrant Task Force Establishes Emergency Fund For NCCP Churches

The NCCP Immigration Task Force has learned that recent ICE activity within the bounds of our presbytery is impacting our congregations and the communities they serve. We have heard about family separation, emotional trauma, and, quite frequently, significant financial hardship because of lost income, emergency travel to detention centers, and other urgent needs.

Because of the great need for immediate relief, the NCCP Mission Support Commission has authorized our Immigration Task Force to provide small amounts of funding to meet emergency needs. If you know of members of your congregation or community who need help and could use this assistance, please complete the attached form and forward it to Executive Presbyter Karen Sapio at karen@nccpresby.org

If your church, Presbyterian Women’s group, or other groups within your church would like to contribute to this fund, please contact the NCCP treasurer, Maria Mar, at treasurer@nccpresby.org

For further information, please contact the Presbytery Office.

Please consider joining us on Zoom weekly (Tuesday at 1-2pm) to discuss the lectionary passages for the coming Sunday. Our group shares thoughts, insights, and questions about the passages. Our conversations not only offer differing perspectives, they provide a forum for support and connection for clergy.
