December 4, 2020: The Second Sunday of Advent

From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
We are celebrating the second Sunday of Advent of 2020, the second week of the new liturgical year. A friend of mine from my former parish, Infant Jesus of Prague in Flossmoor, is turning 102 years old this week. His faith and his spirit remain fond memories of my time shared with him and his family during my years as his pastor.

A recent note received from a teacher and parishioner helps us reflect on how we go about in faith amidst the pandemic.

“Imagine you were born in 1900.
When you are 14
World War I begins
and ends at 18
with 22 million deaths.
Soon after, a global pandemic
The ′ Spanish Flu ′,
kills 50 million people.
You come out alive and free
You are 20 years old.
Then, at age 29, you survive the global economic crisis that began with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and hunger.
At 33, the Nazis came to power.
You are 39 when WWII begins and ends at 45. During the Holocaust (Shoah), 6 million Jews died.
There will be more than 60 million deaths in total.
When you are 52, the Korean War begins.
At 64, the Vietnam War begins and ends at 75
A boy born in 1985 thinks his grandparents have no idea how difficult life is, but they have survived several wars and disasters.
A boy born in 1995 and now 25 thinks it's the end of the world when his Amazon package takes more than three days to arrive or when he doesn't get more than 15 " likes '' for his photo posted on Facebook or Instagram.
In 2020, many of us are living comfortably, we have access to different sources of home entertainment, and we often have more than we need.
But people are complaining about everything.
However, they have electricity, telephones, food, hot water and a roof over their heads.
None of this existed before.
But humanity has survived much more dire circumstances and has never lost the joy of living.
Maybe it's time to be less selfish, to stop complaining and crying.”

This Advent, may the Scriptures and the prayers of the season guide us in our focus, our attention and our trust in God who does not abandon, but leads and accompanies us in life. The following Advent prayer can be prayed whenever we light a candle, on an Advent wreath or other candle lit during the upcoming months of winter.

During the Season of Advent, let us consider how we might light the darkness with our service as the cares of the world remain in our lives and upon our hearts. The symbolism and truth of the following Advent prayer speaks to the hopes and desires we share as followers of the Lord, the Light of the World.

I will light candles this Advent…
Candles of joy despite all sadness…
Candles of hope where despair keeps watch…
Candles of courage for fears ever present…
Candles of peace for tempest tossed days…
Candles of grace to ease heavy burdens…
Candles of love to inspire all my living…
Candles that will burn all the yearlong…
AMEN

May this season of hope inspire our living and our giving all year long!

Thanks to all of our parishioners who completed the survey last month helping us plan for and schedule Christmas Masses. More than half of the respondents to the survey said that they would be praying with us virtually, streaming in from their homes with loved ones and families that come together to celebrate Christ’s birth. The majority of the other responders to the survey shared that there was a very strong preference to worship in the church building, not in the school gym.

The staff took all of this information into consideration when setting the Christmas Mass schedule. Every Mass offered on Christmas Eve and Christmas day is going to be live streamed for parishioners, guests and family members to join us in prayer. Those who are going to come to the Church of St. Mary, to share in Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day will need to register ahead of time via Sign Up Genius through the parish website. If you do not use a computer, please call the Parish Office and we will gladly register you for Mass this Christmas.

I am asking everyone this Advent to join in sharing with others, parishioners, family members and friends that registration ahead of time is essential to share the joy of Jesus’ birth at the Church of St. Mary. Registering ahead of time, planning ahead of time, deciding ahead of time and registering will assist in scheduling attendees for the Christmas Masses.

All are welcome to worship with us this Advent and Christmas. All are reminded, encouraged and requested to use Signup Genius. Traditionally there are significantly larger crowds at St. Mary’s than we can reasonably handle. In this time of pandemic, with all registering ahead of time, knowing that there are seats available or not will limit disappointment and frustration if one just walks in and anticipates they can enter the church. All are welcome to worship, many will be joining via live streaming as the parish community of the Church of St. Mary’s prayerfully and joyously welcomes the birth of our Lord and our Savior on Christmas.

This year because of the pandemic we will be streaming every Mass offered at St. Mary’s on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. You, your family and friends are warmly invited to pray with the parishioners of St. Mary’s by streaming from the comfort of your home or attending from the comfort of the Church of St. Mary. We are asking that you register for Mass through our parish web site and Sign-up Genius if you will be joining us at church, attending in person, this Christmas.

Our schedule for the season of Christmas is as follows:

  • Thursday, December 24th - Christmas Eve Masses - 3 PM, 5 PM and 10 PM
  • Friday, December 25th - Christmas Day Masses - 9 AM and 11 AM
  • Saturday, December 26th – 5 PM Vigil Mass – Feast of the Holy Family
  • Sunday, December 27th – 8 AM, 10 AM and 12 Noon Masses – Feast of the Holy Family
  • Thursday, December 31st – 5 PM Vigil Mass – Feast of Mary, Mother of God
  • Friday, January 1, 2021 – 9 AM Mass – Feast of Mary, Mother of God
  • Saturday, January 2nd – 5 PM Vigil Mass – Feast of the Epiphany
  • Sunday, January 3rd - 8 AM, 10 AM and 12 Noon Masses – Feast of the Epiphany

We do anticipate larger crowds on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. We are only able to have the number of people in church allowed by the guidelines of the state and Archdiocese thus the reason we are asking everyone to help get the word out to register online or by calling the Parish Office. Please plan accordingly as the Masses on Saturday and Sunday may be less crowded in person at St. Mary’s than the crowds at church on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

The parish is very grateful for the ongoing support to the mission and ministries of St. Mary’s Church. In these economic times, the support of all will assist us in serving the faith community and our parishioners. We have noticed a decline in our offertory collection with the attendance of fewer people due to the COVID protocols by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please consider supporting the ministry and mission of St. Mary’s with a regular contribution or year end gift to the parish.

There are other ways to support the Mission and the Ministry of St. Mary’s. These include:
  • Donate online through your local bank
  • Donate safe and securely via GiveCentral - see instructions below
  • Donating by mailing your contribution to the Church of St. Mary, 201 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045-1917
  • Take a walk and drop your donation off at the Parish Office lockbox.

Also, transfers of appreciated securities allow you to make a gift without paying capital gains tax on your gains, thereby increasing both the amount of your gift as well as the amount of your charitable deduction. Gifts of appreciated securities can be designated for 100% deposit to our parish accounts.

If you are able please consider this option for your year-end giving as we face pressures from decreased offertory collections during the COVID shutdown. Please contact the Business Office and Rebecca Quackenbush at (847) 582-2502 or rquackenbush@churchofstmary.org.

God bless you with a peaceful waiting heart this Advent.

From the Parish Finance Council
Advent 2020
Dear Parishioners of the Church of St Mary,

The Church of St. Mary Parish Finance Council wants to thank all parishioners for their continued and generous support of the Church of St. Mary. Your financial generosity funds the ministries of the Parish, our Religious Education programs and our Parish School. The Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020 will be arriving in your mailboxes in the coming days. An electronic copy of the report is also available on the Church of St. Mary website.

Covid-19 remains the largest challenge for our Parish as we navigate the fall of 2020 and look forward to 2021. This health crisis requires all of us to examine our resources and balance our charitable contributions. Your commitment to the Church of St. Mary enables us to continue to do the critical work of ministering to our Parish, ensuring a safe and enriching environment at our School, and assisting those in need not only at our sharing Parish, but throughout our community.

The financial reality for FY2020 saw a marked decrease in Church donations and continue at a 17% decrease under budget. The demands on all our financial resources are more urgent than ever. We are writing to ask you to consider your level of giving to the Parish. One of the simplest ways to do this is to consider participating in our safe electronic giving system, GiveCentral on the Church of St. Mary website, to ensure your weekly support of the Church. Please turn this letter over for instructions on how to use GiveCentral. With the participation and generosity of all parishioners, we will be able to continue to serve and support the ministries at the Parish.

Know that you can reach out to any member of the Parish Finance Council if you have questions. One of our objectives for the year is to increase the ways we communicate to the parish, in addition to the Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020. May your celebrations with family at Christmas be healthy and joyous for all.

Thank you for your generous and continued support of the ministry and mission of St. Mary’s this Advent and in the New Year.

Respectively submitted.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.

  • Church Entrance:  The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
  • Arrive On Time:  South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
  • Entrance Doors Close:  South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
  • Volunteers:  Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
  • Masks/Face Covering:  Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
  • Hand Sanitizer:  Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
  • Social Distance:  Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
  • 100 Persons Maximum:  A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
  • Church Exit:  The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
  • Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only:  Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
  • Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
  • Restrooms Unavailable:  For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
  • Registration Required:  Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
  • SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.

VOLUNTEERS
We are requesting volunteers to assist and volunteer guidelines will be sent to all volunteers when they SignUp for a Church of St. Mary Volunteer SignUP shift:

Volunteer Tasks:
  • Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
  • Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
  • Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
  • Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
  • Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.
December 6, 2020: Gospel Reflection for The Second Sunday of Advent
On the first Sunday of Advent the theme of our scripture readings was we are to be watching for the coming of the Lord. This Sunday we are to look at our lives and prepare ourselves for the Good News that Jesus brings. We are to look at our lives and ask ourselves “What are the obstacles in our lives that prevent us from keeping God at the center of our lives?” Is it our driving desire for more? More money, more homes, more … stuff? These things are not about being God centered; other-centered.

This Sunday and next Sunday we will encounter John the Baptist, who really knows about not getting caught up in things. John may come off as a bit of a wild person but he is very fervent about getting people ready for the one who is mightier than he. So what can we glean about John the Baptist from Sunday’s gospel? John lives a life that is counter cultural. He lives in the desert because the cities are places of temptation. He wears camel hair clothing because the religious elite are all about exterior appearances and the finery they wear. So John wears the opposite as he is interested in his interior, his spirituality. It is also reminiscent of the Prophet Elijah. John eats locusts and honey, not fancy food, because he is spiritually nourished. John lives where a prophet would live, eats the food of a prophet, wears the clothes of a prophet; John the Baptist is a prophet. He is the prophet that bridges the Old Testament and the New Testament.

John’s role is to get everyone he can, including us, to be spiritually ready to hear what Jesus has to say and to have their hearts, minds and souls open to living out Jesus’ mission and ministry. In order to do that one must be baptized with water for the forgiveness of sin. How are we to know if someone has repented; by their actions, by bearing good fruit. John is calling people to a change of heart, soul and behavior. The Greek word for this is metanoia. We are to constantly be in a state of metanoia, being open to the will of God and allowing that to transform how we live our lives. Our entire consciousness, our way of living, should be in line with what God wants for us.

MARY: WOMAN OF GREAT COURAGE AND CHARACTER

Mary, the mother of Jesus, commonly referred to as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary and Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and considered by many to be the greatest of all Christian saints. She was a willing servant who trusted God and obeyed His call. While her life held great honor, her calling also required great suffering. Though there was joy in motherhood, there was great pain in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. Despite these things, she responded to God with great obedience and submission to His plan. Her life never robbed Jesus of His glory, for her mission was to witness the glory of the Son of God. She was a person of discipleship and faith, and the first true follower of Jesus.

PRESENTER: CAITLYN TRADER
Caitlyn is a doctoral student in theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL. She holds a master’s in bioethics from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND and an S.T.L. (Licentiate of Sacred Theology) from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. She is passionate about studying the interplay between theology and medicine and has a great zeal to teach others about the Faith. Mundelein seminarians will also join and present for part of the zoom sessions.

Ways to Volunteer
Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed

Are you interested in helping seniors in your community? Catholic Charities partners with Meals on Wheels America to provide a noontime meal for those who are homebound or unable to prepare their own food due to physical or mental difficulties. Many of our Meals-on-Wheels clients see only one person per day—our volunteers. Many of them would be unable to live independently without home-delivered meals. Volunteers are needed throughout Lake County, but the need is greatest right now in Fox Lake, Wauconda, and Mundelein. This is a great role for a group or individual who has a few hours once a week or once a month. Substitute and seasonal volunteers are needed as well!

The Soup Kitchen is in need of clean plastic grocery-type bags to use in distributing our take-out meals. We use an estimated 900-1000 per week, and purchasing them uses funds which could be better spent on food stuffs. We would appreciate anyone who can save their plastic bags and donate them for reuse. You can call Ellen Tierney at (847) 295-4649; or e-mail ellenkelly@comcast.net for more information or special pickup arrangements. Thank you for your help.

Stewardship
“Prepare the way of the Lord...”  MARK 1:3

We are all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, does just that –it puts us on the path to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too.
