Local Working Group Meetings (Jan. 5 & 6, 2022)
Local Working Groups (LWGs) advise Natural Resources Conservation Service on how to spend USDA Farm Bill funds to address conservation concerns in our region. Please participate to ensure your voice is heard!

Knox-Lincoln, Kennebec and Waldo Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) field offices in Belfast and Augusta, will host virtual meetings of the Knox-Waldo and Kennebec-Lincoln Local Working Groups (LWGs).
If you are an agricultural producer; forester, logger or private woodland owner; member of an environmental or watershed organization or land trust; knowledgeable in soil, water, plant, wetland or wildlife sciences; and/or are familiar with agricultural and natural resource concerns in Knox or Waldo counties, we invite you to attend this meeting to help 1) identify and prioritize local conservation concerns; and 2) recommend how local funds for USDA Environmental Quality Incentive Programs (EQIP) will be distributed by NRCS to alleviate problems.
2022 meetings will be held online. To attend either of these meetings, please contact your local soil & water conservation district for the meeting link:

  • Lincoln/Kennebec: January 5th from 10am - noon
  • Knox/Waldo: January 6th from 10am - noon
If you are unable to attend, you may send comments to your local soil & water conservation district. FMI about LWGs, please visit https//www.knox-lincoln.org/local-working-group.

Fertilizer Cost Calculation Tools Available
Fertilizer costs and supply are reported to be fluctuating widely this winter. It is going to be worth the time and effort to shop around and compare fertilizer sources. Michigan State Extension has a new fertilizer cost comparison tool to help you do just that. There are separate tools for vegetable, forage, and field crops, in addition to an "Introduction to Fertilizer Planning" resource. Find them all at this link.
Heat Conservation in Greenhouses and High Tunnels Resource
Michigan State Extension recently released a list of methods for conserving energy when heating greenhouses this winter. Some of the listed methods include;
  • Upgrading to new high efficiency heating systems
  • Installing infrared (IR) anti-condensate polyethylene film
  • Installing root zone heating
  • and More.
See the full list and benefits seen from these improvements at the full fact sheet here.

Webinar on COVID-19 impacts to Maine's Food System
A webinar on the 2021 study of COVID-19's impact on Maine's food system (which included surveys of farmers, consumers and buyers) is scheduled for Wednesday December 8,

"What lessons can we learn from the pandemic that will help us better support Maine’s farmers and local food system? In 2021, CDI, CEI, MFT and MOFGA joined forces to survey how Maine’s food system is being impacted by COVID-19. While the pandemic is not yet over, and it’s too soon to draw conclusions about long-term impacts, the survey results give farm and food business service providers, as well as consumers, unique insight into key areas that need support. Join us for an overview of the resulting report and its key findings, which we hope will help inform a community of practice around ways farms and food businesses and their ecosystem can empower greater resilience for if/when there is another crisis that impacts our food system in Maine."

Proposed projects are restricted to improving the food safety of specialty crops. The application deadline is December 15, 2021. Glenda Pereira
New Dairy Specialist
Glenda Pereira has been named assistant Extension professor and statewide dairy specialist with University of Maine Cooperative Extension. She also is an assistant professor of animal science with the UMaine School of Food and Agriculture.
Pereira grew up on her family's dairy farm in the Azores with 100 purebred registered Holsteins. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with a focus on precision dairy, crossbreeding and low-input, pasture-based feed efficiency.
While the Holstein has long been a favorite breed of dairy cattle, Pereira says she also admires the Normande. Her dairy products of choice: sour cream and ice cream.
As the UMaine Extension dairy specialist, Pereira will work directly with dairy farmers, conduct applied research and develop educational programs for dairy and livestock producers across Maine and New England.
