The Department of Global, International & Area Studies at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for the position of department chair beginning July 2015. The successful candidate will be engaged in the interdisciplinary field of international studies and familiar with its challenges and opportunities, with a record of academic leadership and administrative experience necessary to serve as chair of the department, and with a scholarly record that is commensurate with a tenured appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor. We are especially interested in someone broadly trained in international studies, whose scholarly work would complement the Department's foci on peace and conflict studies, comparative genocide and human rights studies, or development and sustainability studies.

Requirements for the position include: 1) a Ph.D. in international studies or a related discipline at the time of appointment; 2) a record of scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with a tenured appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor; 3) the ability to provide the vision and leadership necessary to preside over the department and to facilitate its continued advancement; 4) a commitment to multi-disciplinary approaches to scholarship and teaching as it relates to the further development of the department's mission and curricula; 5) a commitment to the education of the department's diverse student population; and, 6) the ability to contribute to the department's scholarly, instructional, and service activities. Also desired is experience in a multi-disciplinary department. The department chair is responsible for overseeing all administrative tasks that fall within the purview of the position including (but not necessarily restricted to) strategic planning, management of the budget, supervision and evaluation of the unit's faculty and staff, monitoring of academic policies and procedures, curriculum development, class scheduling, student advising, representing the department at meetings and events, and interfacing with both on and off campus constituencies.  

Established in 2009, the Department of Global, International & Area Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies and minors in International Studies and Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Studies. The department's interdisciplinary approach and perspectives are reflected in the composition of its faculty and in its programs of study. The department has strong collaborative relationships with other academic departments and works closely with the University's Office of International Programs in providing study abroad opportunities for its students and in offering a range of programming designed to further the internationalization of the campus. The Department also houses the Center for Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Studies which promotes scholarly activity and educational programming to further understanding of the Holocaust and of other crimes against humanity across the world.
