RAAM Adds 2 New Events to the 2023 RQ Calendar

We have added 2 events to the 2023 RAAM Qualifier Calendar: a road RQ - Race Across India; and a time trial RQ – Psycho 48. With the addition of these events, the RQ Calendar now features 46 events in 19 countries.

Race Across India (Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India) – February 1, 2023

Participants will start in the City of Srinagar, located in the region of Jammu and Kashmir in the extreme north of India, and ride 3,651km (2,268mi) to the City of Kanyakumari, in the State of Tamil Nadu, on the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. The event will be open to solo racers as well as 2 and 4-person teams. Support crews with vehicles are mandatory.

India is an incredibly diverse country. Participants will experience substantial variations in weather, from the snow capped Himalayas, across the plains of Punjab and deserts of Rajasthan, over the Deccan Plateau to the hot and humid coastal areas of the south. They will pass through multiple mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, Aravalli, Vindhyas and Satpura. They will cross major rivers, including the Yamuna,Chambal, Betwa, Narmada, Godavari and Krishna.

This will be Asia’s longest RAAM-format bicycle race and like RAAM, the clock does not stop. Solo racers 18-50 have 12 days to finish, 50+ have 13 days to finish. 2-person teams have 10 days to finish and 4-person teams 8 days.

The race has been organized by a team of individuals with substantial experience. All have made a long-term, multi-year commitment to the race.

Psycho 48 (Bayboro, NC) – October 21, 2023

The Psycho 48 is a 24-hour time trial RQ. The event takes place in the North Carolina coastal lowlands. The start/finish is located a couple miles east of Bayboro. Bayboro is located on the Bay River about 70 miles – as the crow flies – across Pamlico Sound west of Cape Hatteras.

The course is a 35.6-mile clockwise loop with 140 feet of elevation gain (4ft/mi). The course is the flattest TT RQ in the RQ System. There is something for everyone – an open distance fun ride, 100 miles, 12-hour, 24-hour, 48-hour … ride as much or as little as you want. The event is open to all bicycle types. There are plenty of age groups. There are drafting and non-drafting divisions.

This is a low cost, fun, low key event. Like the websites says, “The rules are few: be safe, play nice and don’t get hurt!” Well, there are a few more … but you get the idea. Very refreshing.

The Psycho 48 is – as their website states – “out in the country”. There is on-site camping (no hook-ups). Accommodations can be found in the village of Oriental (10 miles south of Bayboro on the Neuse River) or New Bern (20 miles west of Bayboro, also on the Neuse River).

Event organizer, Carol Beliveau, is well-known in the ultra community. She has raced many RQs, including the Natchez 444, Mid-Atlantic 12/24, Bike Sebring 12/24, Texas RAAM Challenge and the 6-12-24 WTTC.

The 2023 race will mark the 3rd running of the Psycho 48. There were 25 participants the first year and 75 participants the second year. The quickly growing event has attracted considerable attention. Check it out!

UPDATE - Ultra-Bicycle Racing in India

In the previous RAAM Newsletter we provided a brief history and report on the current state of ultra-bicycle racing on the Indian sub-continent. Since that article there have been a couple of substantive changes.

First, the 2022 Race Around Karnataka – scheduled to start December 5, 2022 in Bangalore - has been cancelled. Our hope is that the Race Around Karnataka – organized by Solo RAAM finisher Srinivas Gokulnath (2017) - will make its debut in 2023.

Second, the Race Across India – scheduled to start February 1, 2023 in Srinigar - has been added to the 2023 RQ Calendar. (see separate article in this RAAM Newsletter) This race has been organized by a group including Solo RAAM finisher Amit Samarth (2017). We wish them the very best.

Both Gokulnath and Samarth will be racing Solo RAAM in 2023. The pair put on a good show in 2017 – Samarth finished a mere 2h:26m behind Gokulnath after 3,082 miles of racing! Of course, we should mention there are 4 racers from India registered for Solo RAAM in 2023. In addition to Gokulnath and Samarth, 2x Solo RAAM finisher Kabir Rachure (2019 and 2022) and Bharat Pannu (DNF 2022) have registered for 2023 Solo RAAM.  The upcoming race should be very interesting. Notwithstanding the cancellation of this year’s Race Around Karnataka, we expect ultra-bicycle racing in India will continue to grow.

For more information and links to the event websites, please see the RQ Calendar on the RAAM website … https://www.raamrace.org/qualifying-races

NOTE: At this time of year - many event organizers are finalizing dates, updating their websites, etc. So, don’t be surprised if there are websites that do not have 2023 start dates, have incorrect or incomplete information, or are inactive. Check back frequently. The RQ Calendar on the RAAM website is the most reliable source of information.
