Mayor Burton first to apply for new funds for youth-led climate initiatives

At the COP28 Climate Change Conference, Mayor Burton was the first mayor to sign up for the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action fund. The Youth Climate Action Fund will provide the cities with technical assistance and funding to engage thousands of youth between the ages of 15 and 24 years to design, produce, and govern climate solutions.

“Attending the Local Climate Action Summit at the COP28 was a great opportunity for our Oakville community. I look forward to organizing our own local summit and working with youth on climate action initiatives,” said Mayor Burton.

Powered by United Cities and Local Governments, with expertise from Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action fund will provide up to 150 cities with:

Initial grant funding of $50,000 USD* to rapidly launch and support youth‐led climate initiatives over six months through microgrants.
Expert virtual guidance on launching and managing microgrants of up to $5,000 USD to fund a groundswell of youth‐led climate initiatives that meet local needs and goals.
Plus, cities that commit the initial $50,000 USD within six months will receive another $100,000 USD*, to be awarded for additional youth‐led microgrants over 12 months. Together, this will unleash thousands of projects around the globe!

In his speech at the Local Climate Action Summit, Michael Bloomberg, UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions said, “For many years, the conventional thinking was that climate change was a challenge that only national governments could solve, and that solving it would require economic sacrifice. And while national governments struggled to find consensus, local leaders charged ahead together, they began sharing strategies for battling climate change, and the ideas spread from city to city, state to state and region to region.”

Mayor Burton discussed innovative strategies and insights with a focus on youth community engagement for climate action with fellow mayors and with world-class subject-matter experts.

Sessions on Inclusive Strategies for Local Climate Adaptation and Resilience, A Just Local Energy Transition and Nature Positive Cities and A Danish Climate Journey: Local Action Delivering 76% GHG Reductions through Multi-level Partnership were a few of the events that Mayor Burton attended.

Mayor Burton met and collaborated with mayors from more than 150 countries, some as close as Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie and Mayor John Giles from the City of Mesa, Arizona, and as far away as Mayor Kobba Musa from the City of Bo, in Sierra Leone. Mayor Burton also met with Federal Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeault at the Canadian Pavillion at the conference.

United Nations Secretary-General Guterres commended mayors: “Local leaders are often going further and faster than their national governments to tackle the climate crisis. Around the world, leaders like you are reducing fossil fuels, creating green jobs, cleaning up polluted air and investing in sustainable infrastructure and public transportation systems. And every step you take is making a difference and I applaud your leadership.”

On a panel on Climate Finance, French President Emmanuel Macron stated, “Nobody has to choose between fight against poverty and climate change”, while discussing his international initiative to finance the fight against poverty and climate change.

The proposed BESS boasts an impressive maximum capacity of up to 250 MW/1000 MWh, promising to revolutionize energy storage capabilities. This innovative technology is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing Oakville's energy infrastructure.

The public meeting, a key forum for community input, will delve into the details of the project, addressing any concerns and offering residents a comprehensive understanding of the potential impact. Acciona Energia aims to ensure transparency and collaboration in this transformative venture.

Halton Region staff present 2024 budget

Staff presented the proposed Halton Region 2024 budget, highlighting developments in key areas impacting our community. Regional Council will approve or amend the budget at the December 13 Council meeting.

The plan focuses on maintaining our region's strong infrastructure and ensuring continued financial stability, as evidenced the Region’s Aaa and AAA credit ratings.

Health Department: A proposed $2.9 million Towards enhancing our COVID-19 response and reinforcing our paramedic services. This includes the addition of staff and resources to address the increasing healthcare needs of our community. Despite a noticeable $9.9 million funding gap in public health, our plan prioritizes the health and well-being of every resident.

Social and Community Services: Significant attention is given to strengthening mental health support, housing, and employment services. The department is set to enhance programs for children, families, and seniors, ensuring that vital services reach those in need. This includes bolstering employment support programs, expanding affordable housing options, and enhancing community support initiatives. These efforts are designed to build a more resilient and inclusive Oakville, recognizing the diverse needs of our residents.

Public Works: Waste Management is bolstered with a $3.4 million increase for efficient service delivery. Road Operations received a $2.5 million enhancement for improved safety and infrastructure development. A $260,000 boost in Development Services counters inflation and maintains service standards.

Water and Wastewater Services: Water and Wastewater Services witnessed a 4.3% increase, essential for the upkeep and modernization of our water and wastewater infrastructure.

Mayor Burton welcomes TCO to Oakville

Mayor Rob Burton joined TCO founder Jodi Rouah, MSW, RSW, for The Therapeutic Collective Oakville (TCO) grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

TCO currently houses social workers and psychotherapists providing in-person counseling to individuals, children, teens, couples, and families from Oakville and neighboring areas. Beyond professional services, TCO fosters a supportive community environment for clinicians to connect socially through activities such as group yoga, meditation, games, and dinners out.

Founder Jodi Rouah responded to a growing demand for in-person connections, creating TCO to facilitate a smooth transition back to in-person therapy. The space accommodates therapists from various backgrounds and specialties, including those from Jodi's own group practice, Counselling and Co.

The holiday season is upon us, and Oakville is ready to shine brighter than ever with the return of two beloved events – the enchanting Holiday Lights by the Lake and the heartwarming Oakville Firefighters’ Drive-Thru Toy Drive.

Holiday Lights by the Lake – A Winter Wonderland Unveiled!

Starting December 1, Coronation Park will be transformed into a winter wonderland for the third consecutive year. With over 90 trees adorned with 130,000 twinkling lights, 100 captivating light displays lining the paths, and 13 mesmerizing spotlight and laser displays, the park promises an immersive festive experience for families and friends alike.

Oakville Firefighters’ Drive-Thru Toy Drive

On December 8, from 5 to 9 p.m., families are invited to embark on a special drive-thru journey through Coronation Park. This magical evening, hosted by the Town of Oakville in partnership with the Oakville Professional Firefighters Association (OPFFA), invites visitors to enjoy the lights, drop off unwrapped toys or gift cards, and even send a letter to Santa. The event will feature eight visual performers, the Oakville Fire Safety team, and the beloved Sparky the Fire Dog.

While all donations are appreciated, this year’s focus is on toys and winter supplies for infants and youth aged 13 to 15. For gift ideas, visit the OPFFA Toy Drive page. Donations will directly benefit local families, institutions, and community agencies supporting children and youth in need.

Can’t Attend? Donate Anyway!

For those unable to attend the drive-thru event on December 8, the OPFFA will be accepting gift cards, toys, and non-perishable food donations until December 18. Drop-offs can be made at various locations across town, including Town Hall, fire stations, select recreation and culture facilities, and retail outlets. On December 8, Coronation Park will be accessible exclusively as a drive-thru event. On other days, the park welcomes pedestrians and vehicles for a leisurely exploration of the holiday lights. Oakville's 2018 TMP prioritizes all modes of transportation, emphasizing public transit, walking, cycling, and ride-sharing. It strategically integrates roadway improvements, ensuring a holistic approach to community mobility.

HRPS: Police Identify Suspects in Residential Break-In Spree

**UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE December 6, 2023**

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has arrested an additional two suspects wanted in this investigation.

On December 5, 2023, Jordan Saccucci (33) of Mississauga and Dumark Lindsay (41) of Mississauga were arrested in Oakville. They have each been charged with 68 Break and Enter related offences.

Both accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

The Chevrolet Tahoe RST pictured in the initial media release has also been recovered by police. It was located in Brampton with fake plates attached to it and determined to be stolen.

Marcel Blackburn (37) of Hagersville remains wanted in connection with this investigation.
