SHOP LOCAL AND BUILD COMMUNITY

Orcas Island

Now thru Forever

If you've been paying attention these past few months, you've noticed an abruptly changing landscape among our small island businesses. Fewer and unpredictable hours, staffing shortages, extended and early seasonal breaks, and closures. A few weeks ago, the island came together in support of our local businesses as part of Small Business Saturday to great success. But one-day promotions do not sustain a business operating at razor-thin margins as is the case for many or most of our brick and mortars on Orcas.

So what to do? Be a local by spending locally, keeping money on island building and supporting our community. As we noted before, 68 cents of every dollar spent locally stays in the local economy. That means it will make its way back to you!

Especially over the next few weeks of holiday shopping, let's do what we can to keep Orcas strong and support our friends and neighbors. Businesses are busy getting ready for islanders to grace their doorways!

For the latest info on hours of operation, the newest merchandise and menu items, special events, and discounts, check out our web page dedicated to the retailers, restaurants, and bars that help make Orcas so special. We'll update the page in advance of each weekend and as info comes in, so check back for the latest!

WINTER SOLSTICE LUMINARY PARADE

Luminary Workshop, Orcas Center

Saturday, December 9, 12-4pm

Luminary Parade, begins at Orcas Island Community Foundation

Thursday, December 21, 4pm

Second only to New Orleans in its love for parades, Orcas now has a new winter tradition to celebrate: the Winter Solstice Luminary parade! On December 21 at 4pm, the first “Be the Light” luminary parade will commence on Orcas Island. On the longest night of the year, come together for a winter-themed event celebrating togetherness, resilience, joy, creativity and community as we usher in the colder, darker months. This gathering and procession is meant to serve as an uplifting and celebratory reminder that we all have the power to create and share the light.

The parade is for ALL islanders, all ages and anyone who would like to participate. You are invited you to bring a luminaria to carry in the parade or just come and walk.

A free luminary making workshop will be held at the Orcas Center in the Madrona Room on Saturday, December 9th from 12-4, hosted by local artist and A*OK art teacher, Brook Meinhardt.

Attend the workshop and walk away with your own luminary that day or choose to craft your own at home. Free LED tea lights can be picked up at the workshop or the Orcas Island Community Foundation. The parade begins at the Orcas Island Community Foundation parking lot at 33 Urner Street and will follow along Main Street, down Beach Road to the Village Green with lanterns and luminaries of all shapes lighting our collective path towards warmer, brighter days ahead. The Odd Fellows’ drum line will be featured!

The parade will conclude with an all-community gathering with bonfire, music and warm beverages on the Village Green. Once the parade comes to a close, participants and visitors are encouraged to support local businesses.

Participating Eastsound businesses will feature special promotions and festivities throughout the event and into the evening. Questions can be directed to the Orcas Island Community Foundation: [email protected] or 360.376.6423 or the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce: [email protected] or 360.376.2273
