Season's Greetings from Kathy Underwood |
The winter holiday season is upon us! This past Sunday, we had our Ornament Sunday – a UCE tradition that has continued post-pandemic. We had a nice assortment of ornaments to create: upcycled cardboard, paper straws, beads, foam, pinecones, cards for prison ministry, and more. Be sure to take a peek at the tree in the sanctuary, with all its hand-crafted charm.
Last month I wrote about ways we can uplift others who may be struggling during the holidays, such as staying in touch with a phone call, card, or letter, or meeting for a cup of coffee or tea, or going for a brisk walk along the lakefront or around the block. Inviting someone to join you at one of the many events at UCE this month is another way to help lift someone’s spirits. The winter months are also a time for introspection and reflection, and there are several opportunities to do so in community with others.

Hats Off for Ornament Sunday!
We are grateful for the many people who made Ornament Sunday a fun time this year. We had a nice variety of ornament crafts, thanks to the efforts of Linda Herreid, Gillian Lawrence, Janice Milanovich, Carol Nielsen, Margaret Shaklee, Charlie Ganner, Rachel Heiss, and Peggy Cloonan. We are also grateful to Steve Serikaku and Becky Taveirne for card-writing and collaborating between the Prison Ministry Team & AOTF Radical Inclusion and Hospitality Working Group. And it wouldn’t have that holiday feel without a Christmas tree and lights, thanks to Robb Geiger, Griffin Larson-Erf, and Reed Larson-Erf. The Christmas season is off to a wonderful start with this UCE tradition!

A Unitarian Universalist Vigil for the Survival of Gaza
Sunday, December 10th, 2023
6:00 PM to 7:15 PM Eastern
Zoom provided upon RSVP
This vigil, open to all, is to honor the spiritual work toward ending the violence. We are calling for a permanent ceasefire and end to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, a release of all hostages/prisoners, humanitarian aid, and an accountability process that is not rooted in revenge. We deeply honor the worth and dignity of all Palestinians and all Israelis.
We aim to be present with one another and deepen our attention to the crises in Gaza as Unitarian Universalists. We are mindful of the deep and complex roots in the minds and hearts of Westerners.
Join us as we grieve, rage, learn, and find solace together. The vigil will be held for 45 minutes, with a 30 minute facilitated breakout session for those who wish to connect more intentionally.
RSVP Required for Zoom: druumm.org/events

Recognizing & Resisting Fascism as People of Faith
A Unitarian Universalist Social Justice (UUSJ) fundraising event
Tuesday, December 12, 2023
7:00 p.m. CT
Online, via Zoom: Tickets/Registration
Many Unitarian Universalists have been very concerned with the natural and present danger to our democracy and the rise of anti-democracy movements. UUSJ proudly presents one of our denomination's most celebrated thinkers on this topic, the Rev. Cecilia Kingman. She is the author of the acclaimed 2023 Berry Street Address, titled “My Little Pony Was Right: Reflections on Fascisms Without and Within.”
Rev. Kingman has been studying authoritarian systems for most of her life and is currently doing doctoral work at the Pacific School of Religion on the responses of faith communities to fascist and totalitarian regimes. After the collapse of the communist dictatorship in Romania, she spent two decades working with the Unitarians of Transylvania to strengthen civil society and support sustainable agricultural and community development.
Join UUSJ for our major end-of-the-year fundraising event.

Write a letter to Someone Incarcerated this Holiday Season
Prison life, particularly during the holidays, is isolating, acutely lonely, and deeply depressing, especially for folks who have lost touch with family or loved ones. You could make a significant difference in someone's life this holiday season.
Become a prison pen pal—sending letters, cards, and e-messages to someone in prison. Studies show that an incarcerated person with connections to the outside world (such as a pen pal), will be 6 times less likely to reoffend within their first year of release. Please contact Rev. Allison Farnum, Director of UU Prison Ministry of Illinois, at uupmi.info@gmail.com to learn more.

In 1943, Irene Woodward and Dorothy Dunne signed up to be "Donut Dollies,” a wing of the Red Cross driving trucks equipped to make donuts and coffee into the chaos that is WWII. Their charge is to comfort American soldiers with a taste of home and a sympathetic ear. They do much more than that and return home heroes.
