ACEs Aware December Initiative: Promoting ACEs Screenings in Practice
The ACEs Screening tool and initiative to address childhood trauma is a small step in a long history of pediatric research and programs on understanding how children thrive, and how we can support them. 

This month, we look at how Humboldt County, a county with an atypically high population with ACEs, have effectively implemented screenings and trauma informed care into their practice.

What You Can Do When Your County Has High ACEs Scores, A Case Study in Humboldt County
As pediatricians, we recognize that part of our responsibility is to identify and call out the inequitable conditions responsible for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that are associated with poorer adult outcomes. Screening and understanding ACEs has changed this community’s approach to supporting the health and welfare of their children.

Lauren Steele MD, Michael Mangahas MD and Dr. Evan R. Buxbaum were not surprised when it was recently reported that the rate of childhood ACEs in adults living in Humboldt county out-ranked all other California counties. These pediatricians, who have been serving local families for years, report that this is an amazing community of people that has suffered from its rural isolation, embedded drug culture and economic woes. They regularly witness high rates of parental separation, foster care, parental incarceration, parental substance use, and parental mental health concerns in their families.

All in For Kids Healthcare Provider Social Media Graphics

All in For Kids is a new Bay Area initiative dedicated to preventing and ending early childhood adversity in partnership with kids, families and communities that are disproportionately affected by trauma. The Fund plans to vest in pioneering, community-led strategies and policy changes that protect children from trauma and provide more comprehensive health, safety, education, housing and economic support for care givers and families. 

Their Take Action Healthcare Provider Social Media Tool kit gives information and graphics displaying what providers can do today. These graphics can be reprinted for patients, or used in electronic communications or webpages viewed by families.
ACEs Aware Request for Proposals – Trauma-Informed Networks of Care

Are you interested in building more community resources to address ACEs? The Office of the Surgeon General has released a new grant opportunity for communities that want to plan or implement trauma-informed networks of care. The objective of the grant is to create, augment, and sustain formal connections between Medi-Cal providers, social service systems, and community partners to effectively address toxic stress in children and adults.
