Happy Holidays from the team over here at AEDC! We wanted to wish everyone good tidings and a happy New Year as we are just days away from 2022. When I look back on 2021, I can’t help but feel so grateful for our community. This year has proven that we are resilient, and when working together, our community and its members show up for one another when it’s needed most. I hope everyone has an amazing holiday, whether you’re staying home or traveling, please remember to be safe.
See you next year!
-- Ross

Earlier this month AEDC received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund). We were one of 265 institutions awarded this financial assistance. The awards, through the fiscal year (FY) 2021 round of the Community Development Financial Institutions Program (CDFI Program) and the Native American CDFI Assistance Program (NACA Program), will enable CDFIs to increase lending and investment activity in low-income and economically distressed communities.
As a Community Development Financial Institution, AEDC is dedicated to delivering responsible, affordable lending to the people and organizations in our community who need it most. With our last CDFI Funding grant, we were able to start financing larger community development projects which included the Open Door Community Health Project in Eureka. After that project, AEDC started looking at other large community projects that didn't fit in with traditional commercial lending funding sources—projects like the Carson Block Building, the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation, the Arcata Volunteer Fire Department, and so much more.
Many small businesses and community development projects lack access to the capital investment necessary to improve economic growth. The Community Development Financial Institutions Program (CDFI Program) invests federal resources—which are matched with private funding—in CDFIs to serve low-income and underserved people and communities. If you know of a project that would benefit greatly from some financial assistance, reach out to our office today (707) 798-6132!

AEDC has just participated in Keep Eureka Beautiful's tree program and planted a brand new Red Maple tree in an effort to help keep Eureka beautiful! "We're looking forward to seeing our tree grow and to experience the colors Maples are known for," said Ross Welch. "Street trees are also good for calming traffic. 7th Street is busy and loud. More trees can help with that. We're just trying to do our part."
Keep Eureka Beautiful is an all-volunteer effort that was founded in 1996 to help build civic pride in Eureka, promoting beautification as a community building and economic development tool. The mission of this project is to encourage residents and our local businesses to maintain and enhance the beauty of this Victorian Seaport. Communities that are kept clean and attractive, often enjoy more economic benefits and even experience less crime.
Keep Eureka Beautiful can help you plant a tree(s) on the sidewalk or green strip. There’s a $75.00 fee to offset the cutting of the holes in the sidewalk for street trees. If the sidewalk is not wide enough to accommodate a tree, there is no charge for yard trees planted near the sidewalk or in the green strip. To get a tree, simply email: info@keepeurekabeautiful.com and include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. You will receive a packet of information, which includes the City’s Street Tree Agreement. To learn more, visit keepeurekabeautiful.com.

From Our Family to Yours—Here’s a Holiday Recipe to Enjoy!
|
|
There’s always so much going on during the holiday season, especially in people’s kitchens. Sweet treats and festive feasts are some of our favorite things about this magical time of the year. And in order to spread some holiday cheer, we wanted to share some special recipes that are very near and dear to some of our staff members here at AEDC.

Below, is Jayne’s recipe from her grandmother’s Aunt Gertrude. This recipe has been used now for 4 generations and is one of the best Persimmon Cookie recipes that you will ever have the pleasure of making.

Susan Seaman found a new holiday recipe this year that she hopes to carry into future winter season celebrations: Eggnog Mousse with Gingerbread Strudel. This is more like a custard-ish mousse, which takes a bit more effort than most mousse recipes, but it's totally worth it! She topped hers with some green sprinkles and three red hot candies to give it some extra holiday pop!
