Meet the Specialist: Education Policy January 9

LWVMA’s Meet the Specialist program offers members the chance to take a deep dive into the bills we support in a topic area. Join Education Policy K-12 legislative specialist Robin Chen on Tuesday, January 9, at 12 Noon, via Zoom to learn about A) the crisis in funding and salaries for early education and care, and B) how outdated school curriculum can be. LWVMA supports affordable early education and childcare by advocating for passage of H489/S301, An Act Providing Affordable and Accessible High Quality Early Education and Care to Promote Child Development and Well-Being and Support the Economy in the Commonwealth (Common Start). Read more.

AG Campbell Posts Guidance on Candidate Forums and the

Open Meeting Law

Before November’s municipal elections, the Waltham city solicitor issued an opinion that it would be “’potentially problematic’ for elected city officials to participate in discussions at political forums that relate to issues currently before the City Council or its committees,” according to an editorial in the Boston Globe. That opinion put a damper on a candidate forum held by the Waltham LWV, as well as other forums. Waltham had many candidates, including incumbents, running for City Council. Read more.

Keep an Eye on Mail Voting in Spring Town Elections

Many towns will find their local town elections are close to the Presidential primary election on March 5. Watch to make sure your town clerk does not ask your Select Board to eliminate voting by mail for the town election because of the workload from the Presidential primary. Read more.
