Insurance Enrollment for Spring 2019

Do not forget to enroll for health insurance!   Please note that medical insurance is a requirement for F-1 students. Namely, F-1 students must enroll in SJSU's medical insurance plan which is administered through JCB, unless students have adequate alternate insurance coverage.* JCB manages the financial and enrollment aspects of your health insurance, but the actual health insurance provider (in which you select doctors) is currently Aetna. If you only enrolled in insurance for fall 2018, you will need to re-enroll for spring 2019. If you do not enroll, there will be a registration hold placed on your student record for the following semester.

To enroll for health insurance, please click on the following link:   SJSU Health Insurance Enrollment. Please read the follow steps carefully on how to enroll for health insurance:

1. Click on the link above
2. Type and select "San Jose State University" in the JCB search engine
3. Go to "select your plan year", choose "2018-2019"
4. Go to "what type of student are you?" and select "ISSS International Student"
5. Follow JCB's instructions from here on

* Please reach out to us via email or come in to see us should you have questions regarding alternative health insurance plans. There are strict criteria for alternative international student health insurance plans.

Reduced Course Load Requests for Spring 2019

Although enrollment for spring 2019 is currently open, we recommend you submit your reduced course load request closer to the beginning of the semester  (01/24/2019). The deadline to submit your RCL for spring 2019 is by the add deadline on February 12.   If you are applying for spring 2019 CPT and you will be filing a reduced course load, you will need to submit your spring 2019 RCL request along with your CPT application during advising hours.

                                      OPT & CPT UPDATES

OPT for Fall 2018 Grads

If you will be graduating this fall, please remember that you will have a grace period from January 1, 2019 until February 28, 2019. ISSS strongly recommends that you apply within the 90 days prior to your program end date (December 31), however, you may also apply in your grace period so long as USCIS RECEIVES your application by the last day of your grace period.

The current wait time for OPT is 2.5 months to 5 months.

Traveling while on OPT:

In general, it is permissible to travel while on approved OPT so long as you have the following documentation upon reentry to the U.S.:

1. Valid EAD card
2. Current job offer letter
3. I-20 signed within the last 6 months
4. Valid visa
5. Valid passport (with expiration date of at least 6 months into the future)
6. Financial documentation (recommended but not required)

Reporting Requirements for Post-OPT & STEM Extension OPT

Students authorized for OPT have reporting requirements they must fulfill. Post-OPT recipients must report their employment via our employment update report form before their 90 unemployment days expire. STEM Extension recipients must report their employment every 6 months while on STEM OPT, regardless of changes to their employment.
