Dear Parents and Families,

We continue our school-wide theme of learning about HOPE. Mrs. Harvell, Mrs. Norsigian, and Mr. Sarpu presented their thoughts to the faculty at last week’s meeting.

We are excited to connect our theme of HOPE to the upcoming Advent season as we ready

ourselves for the miracle of God coming into our lives. As teachers, we look forward to

instilling, modeling, and stating impactful messages of hope to our students. To that end, we will have a school-wide activity that we hope will help us accomplish this, called Hope Links Us Together.

During this Advent season, your students will complete the prompt “I am hopeful for…” on slips of Christmas-colored paper to create a brightly colored chain to decorate our hallways with our hopes for future blessings. This activity will be a visual reminder of all things hopeful and will link our hearts and minds to this joyful season.

Furthermore, our bulletin boards will decoratively display hope in different languages.

In addition, your child will be encouraged to place mindfulness and hope together. Our goal is for students to set an intention for the Christmas season. Hope is a belief that something good will happen and in order for that hopeful thought to come to fruition one must be intentional. “Setting intentions” means actively choosing a desired direction or mindset, essentially stating what you want to focus on or achieve and to stay present in the moment. For example, your child may hope for a good grade on the next test. Their intention might be to study each day for a certain amount of time. It is about cultivating the right mindset to try to bring what they are hopeful for to life.

Mrs. Harvell, Mrs. Norsigian, and Mr. Sarpu's thoughts exemplify our commitment to enrich your child’s spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and social development. Our goal is to inspire every child to reach his/her fullest potential.

I am grateful to all of you for your many acts of kindness.

Peace,

Mrs. Ann T. Sarpu

Santa’s Workshop

Our Santa’s Workshop, where all students can independently shop for family and friends will be held during school hours on December 9, 10 and 11.

The children will have over 100 delightful gifts to choose from, all ranging in price from $0.50 to $12. This is an amazing opportunity to empower your child to experience the spirit of giving while learning to earn, budget and save.

We will send home a list for your child to fill out beforehand, help them shop to select the best items and best of all, presents will come home already wrapped and ready to put under the tree!

We are also collecting any unused gifts or donations that we can sell in our shop. If you have any new items that could be re-gifted, we would greatly appreciate the donation!

We are always looking for donations of tape, bows, gift wrap, gift tags and gift bags to make these gifts as festive as possible. If you have any donations, please send them to school at your earliest convenience.

Have some extra time on your hands? We will be looking for volunteers and are so grateful to all that can help! Be on the lookout for a SignUp genius in the upcoming Monday Memos.

Weather Watch and Dressing for the Cold Weather

Winter is upon us and it’s important to properly dress for the conditions. Coats, hats and gloves/mittens are a must for students and adults to be outside especially when the temperatures dip below freezing. Remember that the wind-chill also affects the temperature. For example, although it maybe 20 degrees outside, if the wind speed is 10mph, it will feel like 9 degrees out! Not covering up exposed skin can lead to frostbite. Frostbite is an injury to the skin and the underlying layers of the skin that are exposed to temperatures below freezing. The most common areas at risk are the fingers, toes, nose, ears, cheeks and chin.

There are three different stages of frost bite:

1. Frost nip. A mild form of frost bite that causes the skin to pale or turn red and the skin will feel very cold. If the skin continues to be exposed, if will begin to feel prickly and numb. When the skin is warmed, it may be painful. During this stage the skin is not permanently damaged.

2. Superficial frostbite. The skin appears red and turns white or pale. If you warm up the skin during this stage, the surface of the skin can turn blue or purple. Sensations such as stinging, burning and swelling can occur during the rewarming of the skin. Even some blisters can form during this stage.

3. Severe (deep)frostbite. As frostbite progresses, it affects all layers of the skin. Numbness, loss of all sensations to the cold and pain usually occur. Large blisters form 24 to 48 hours after rewarming and these blisters then turn black and hard resulting in tissue death.

Wearing layers allows us to adjust to varying temperatures when going from the outdoors to inside and will help to keep us comfortable all day long. So protect yourself and your family by covering up any bare skin during the cold temperatures
