COMMANDER'S CORNER
Matthew Kampainen, DAV WI Commander

In these trying times
I salute each of you

I want to begin this by extending warm wishes to everybody; as of this writing, we are in the midst of the holiday season. I realize that we are dealing with the impact of COVID-19 so far; many of us are probably celebrating the Seasons differently. However, never forget your DAV family is with you in spirit. As we close out 2020, I would like to thank each of you for tenaciously standing by our mission despite the horrific global pandemic becoming a part of our everyday existence.

Many Chapters did a phenomenal job as they continued to meet by making friends with technology. Others continued to engage in limited activities but utilized best practices through social distancing, wearing masks, and the use of hand sanitizer. We also focused on each other’s wellness as we did simple “buddy checks,” making phone calls, video chats, or sending cards to boost morale.

The camaraderie that we experienced during our military service easily transferred to our life in the veterans community. As your Commander, I have never been so proud of our membership, as we are in the center of a public health storm yet are facing it with compassion, dignity, and honor. As your Commander, I salute each of you and raise a glass of holiday cheer that you have a wonderful Holiday season. Despite its challenges, let us close out 2020 and look forward with fresh eyes toward 2021.

FROM THE DAV DEPARTMENT ADJUTANT LARRY HILL

Happy Holiday Season everyone. As the calendar comes to an end, we finally have some light at the end of the tunnel. A COVID vaccine has been approved, being distributed, and a second one is in the window for approval and distribution. Sometime next calendar year we should be back to full operational status.

The next events for the Department are the District Meetings. Those are to be scheduled in March/April time frame. Once again, we will ask and ensure that they are not scheduled on the same weekend. Districts should be looking for locations in hopes that we will be able to do the meetings in person. The Department is committed to having same personnel in attendance and ensure we deliver same message to all Districts. District Executive Committeepersons coordinate with our Deputy Adjutant, Stan Kogutkiewicz for meeting dates. If we are not able to meet in person then virtual meetings to share information can take place, however no decisions can be made at this time.

I do think it looks good for the conducting of our Convention in June. Planning for that will begin next month with our headquarters staff and Executive Committee. We look forward to getting our membership together once again in Green Bay.

DAV National has opened the window for awards and have provided guidance on submissions. We need to get those in to National by end of January.

Stay safe and healthy, we are going to get through this pandemic together!
