Advocacy Day in Olympia on January 14
th

We are putting together a great lineup of speakers - including Washington's Attorney General Bob Ferguson - and also invite participants who are staying in Olympia the night before to join colleagues for an informal get-together. We will be holding a pre-Advocacy Day prep webinar on December 18th. Details will be sent to registered participants.

The current board of trustees consists of 5 officers, 14 trustees from around the state, and representatives from the state's children's hospitals. As terms expire, we will have openings for 2 trustees and a secretary on the board, and we are seeking nominations to fill these roles.

Changes to State Immunization Rules for Schools and Childcares

WCAAP offers short learning collaborative
The State Board of Health (SBOH) has approved changes to Chapter 246-105 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) concerning school and child care immunization policy. These rules apply to all public and private schools and licensed child care centers in Washington State.

When my husband suggested that we consider spending a week on Whidbey Island this summer working on "Mindfulness," I have to admit I had no idea what I was getting into. As a family physician, he had spent time reading Jon Kabat-Zinn's "Full Catastrophe Living," recognizing how the approach could help his patients. He understood more about the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) process and was intrigued to see if he could find a personal benefit. Me... I was just along for the ride, right?

Editor's note: In October, executives from migrant health centers across the U.S. joined in Asheville, North Carolina, for the annual Migrant Health Best Practices Forum. The theme was "innovation." Topics presented included "Using Data and Technology to Transform the Care of Farmworkers Living with Diabetes," "Addressing Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in Healthcare Workers: An Experimental Approach to Mindfulness," "Patient Experience and Journey Mapping Strategies," "Employee Wellness," and more.
Blake Edwards, who served as the lead behavioral health champion for Washington's Pediatric Transforming Clinical Practices Initiative (P-TCPi), presented, "Primary Care Behavioral Health: Living into the Tensions." We asked Blake to share a snapshot of what he presented:

A biologics license application for a hexavalent vaccine (Vaxelis) was approved and licensed by the FDA on December 21, 2018. The vaccine contains diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP), inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib polyribosylribitol phosphate-outer membrane protein [PRP-OMP]), and hepatitis B (HepB). The vaccine is the product of a joint venture with Merck and Sanofi Pasteur (Lyon, France).

m Gh
ana, and three brothers. He studied biological anthropology and Spanish at Harvard University and attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh with an area of concentration in underserved populations, followed by residency at Seattle Children's. He currently practices at Yakima Pediatrics.

CATCH grant cycle now open.
The 2020 cycle for Community Access to Child Health (CATCH)Planning, Implementation and Resident Grants opened Nov. 1.
Grants of up to $10,000 for pediatricians and fellowship trainees and $2,000 for pediatric residents are available for innovative initiatives that address critical child health issues, engage diverse community partners and provide access to health services not otherwise available in communities.
Applications are due Jan. 15.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
- AAP pediatrician fellow/AAP fellowship trainee.
- AAP national and chapter member (must be member prior to funding being awarded).
- General pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, pediatric surgical subspecialists, and fellowship trainees from the United States and its territories and Canada.
- Residents who are in their 1st or 2nd year of residency on November 1.
- 3rd-year residents may apply as co-applicants, or as primary applicants if they will be chief resident in their 4th year.
WHAT IS A CATCH PROJECT?
- Is led by a pediatrician or pediatric resident.
- Focuses on building strong community partnerships.
- Serves those who are underserved/experience health disparities.
- Provides access to services that lead to optimal child health and well-being.
- Has measurable outcomes.
- Plans for sustainability.
