There's just one month left before the 2021 session starts. The legislative session will be conducted mostly virtually with a very limited amount of in-person work happening in Olympia. It may be more difficult to connect with legislators in this virtual context and we know that children and families' growing needs outstrip state revenue, so it is imperative that we make an impact right from the start!

Series starts December 16th at 7:00-7:30am!
WCAAP has been invited to work with the CDC in presenting Project Firstline, an educational program in Infection Prevention aiming to reach every healthcare worker in the US. As a partner in this initiative, WCAAP will provide a virtual training program, December through March, built on the success of this year's WCAAP COVID Community Pediatrics calls which have concluded. For this program we will also partner with the Washington State Nurses Association, WSNA, extending invitations to Healthcare Staff working with WCAAP members including nurses, MAs, and other interested parties.

Thanks to the support from Amerigroup Washington, the Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) Networking and Collaboration Group was able to meet monthly in 2020 to discuss different topics related to establishing, managing, and refining BHI programs in pediatric primary care settings.

Help Me Grow (HMG) is a national strategy focused on "offering families seamless access to community services and supports so they can easily connect to the resources they need, when they need them." Washington State has been actively engaged in HMG activities for the past 10 years. However, with recent additional support and grant funding, Washington State is now moving towards full statewide HMG implementation.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is a potentially devastating viral infection with a high incidence and low awareness. It is the most frequent cause of congenital infection in the world with an incidence of 1 in 200. This is a higher incidence than any of the other 35 disorders on the Recommended Universal Screening Panel or on the Washington State Newborn Screening Panel. Approximately 40-50% of the population is exposed to this virus before adulthood. Since symptoms can be mild, individuals may unknowingly be infected and shed the virus.

History is big in my house - both of my sons are interested in history and one will graduate college in June with a history degree and the goal to pursue a PhD in African History. (The photo to the right is from the archives - they are much bigger now!)
Thanks to some thought-provoking dinner table conversations over the years - and especially this year - I've committed myself to "un-learning" the history I was taught in school and re-learning from other perspectives. I recently stumbled onto a podcast from Teaching Tolerance called "Teaching Hard History." I've only listened to a few episodes so far, and while it is geared toward educators I have found that the storytelling is excellent, the presenters don't shy away from complex questions, and there are tons of resources listed with each episode. It is a worthwhile listen for anyone who is interested in learning more about our country's hard history.
The second resource I recommend is the November 12 SCH Grand Rounds Addressing Racial Inequities in Our Own Community, with Drs. Shaquita Bell, Anisa Ibrahim, Fabiola Movius, and Christina Pease. Hearing about the barriers people in our communities face, especially in the context of COVID-19, and what these physicians are doing in their own clinics was eye opening and inspiring. I also really appreciated the call to action - I'm not a health care provider, but there are things I can change in my position at WCAAP and in my own community.

ECHO: "Practical Approaches for Addressing Adolescent Substance Use and Prevention ECHO"
Join the AAP Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Substance Use ECHO program. Participants will gain the tools and resources needed to help adolescent patients avoid and reduce the immense risk and harm associated with substance use.

Autism COE Certification: Seattle Children's Autism Center experts provide the Autism Center of Excellence (COE) trainings, in partnership with communities, through a contract with the Health Care Authority (HCA). Because of COVID-19 concerns, we have currently moved the COE training to a hybrid online model. The next training will be on Friday, February 12, 2021, 9am-4pm. Learn more here.
ECHO: ECHO Autism Washington utilizes the innovative Project ECHO hub and spokes learning model to telementor clinicians in all parts of Washington State. Through case-based learning and didactics, Echo Autism WA course faculty experts guide practitioners in the diagnosis and management of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Medical and psychiatric providers who have a Center of Excellence (COE) provider designation and serve children with Medicaid/Apple Health Insurance are eligible to participate. Survey: The detention of children at the U.S. Southern border remains a important public health problem facing children and pediatric providers. A research team at Johns Hopkins is working to characterize clinicians' experiences caring for children crossing the U.S. Southern border who may have experienced detention and family separation. Learning Collaborative: Safe Sleep and Naps Using Guidelines to Lead and Educate (SSNUGLE) is a 6-month learning collaborative focused on improving delivery of safe infant sleep recommendations and anticipatory guidance for families of infants ages birth through 6 months.
