Village of Whitefish Bay Official Weekly Newsletter
Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley

I think we're all excited to see that two businesses opened on Silver Spring in the past few weeks. Please take a trip to visit both Mixed Bag MKE and J. McLaughlin during this holiday season and support these new merchants!

I hope to see you this Saturday, December 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for Bay's Christmas Tree Lighting outside City Market. The Bella Via Dancers will perform, the WFB HS Choir will sing, and Santa will attend. -kb

Why Is The Village Hall Phone Ringing?
Why have the Village streetlights been on during the day? The current high pressure sodium streetlight bulbs are being replaced as part of the LED Relamping Project. All Village streetlights are controlled by zone/area and not individually. Streetlights in areas under construction need to be turned on during the day so the contractor can test the LED lamps/wiring to ensure they are working properly. Work was originally expected to take 2 months, but the contractor currently has three crews working on this project, and it is proceeding more quickly than originally anticipated. Once an area of streetlights is replaced, the lights will go back to normal operation.

When does loose leaf and brush chipper collection end? This is the FINAL week of loose leaf and brush chipper collection. Please have your leaves and brush to the curb by Friday, December 3.

When will property tax information be available? Tax bills will be sent out to homes in mid-December. Detailed information about property taxes, how to find and pay your tax bill online, and payment options will be in an upcoming Village newsletter.

Have a question? Send us an email or give us a call at (414) 962-6690.

Winter Parking Begins Wednesday:
Winter overnight parking is enforced from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. from December 1 through March 31. Vehicles still need to abide by all other parking regulations for the location in which they are parked. An overnight parking permit does not supersede time zone restrictions or other restrictions on a block, and vehicles with overnight parking permits must be moved once every 24 hours. The overnight parking regulations are as follows:
  • Free Nightly Parking Permission: Each license plate gets 25 free parking nights per calendar year. You can request this free nightly permission to park on any street in the Village. In the winter, parking shall be in front or across the street of the residence making the request based on even/odd date (see below). Request free nightly parking at the following webpage: https://parking.wfbvillage.org/
  • Overnight Monthly Parking Permit: Monthly permits can be purchased for any street in Whitefish Bay. In the winter, parking shall be in front or across the street of the residence making the request based on even/odd date (see below).
  • Where Do I Park in the winter (12/1/21 through 3/31/22)? Alternative Side - Even/Odd – Parking: In the winter, monthly permit holders and free nightly permissions will be required to follow alternate side parking. Vehicles should park on the even-numbered side of the street with an even calendar date before midnight, and on the odd-numbered side of the street on those nights with an odd calendar date before midnight (unless an exemption applies). Vehicles with monthly overnight parking permits must be moved once every 24 hours.
  • Overnight Monthly Permit Cost: Permits cost $30.00 per month. Permits are available to purchase online beginning at 5:00 a.m. on the 15th of the month for the next month. Permits are available for sale in person during police administration hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and online 24 hours per day at the following webpage: https://parking.wfbvillage.org/. If the permit is purchased after the 15th of the month, the fee is reduced to $15.00.
  • How many months can I purchase at one time? Beginning December 15, 2021, you may purchase up to 12 months of overnight parking at a time within the 2022 calendar year. You cannot purchase a permit for 2023 until December 15, 2022.
  • What if my parking is already limited to one side of the street and/or my residence borders Glendale? In these circumstances, you would be allowed to park directly in front of your residence year-round with a monthly overnight parking permit. However, an overnight parking permit does not supersede time zone restrictions or other restrictions on a block. The Village will work with residents on a case-by-case basis for other unique circumstances. In addition, Public Works may temporarily need to restrict parking on these streets on an as-needed basis for snow removal.

If you have any questions, please contact the Whitefish Bay Police Department at
(414) 962-3830.
Winter Reminders From Public Works:
Village Snow Plowing Procedures:

Village crews clear streets starting with the main thoroughfares. The crews then proceed to streets adjacent to schools; after that residential streets and alleys are cleared. Sidewalks next to Village land are also cleared.
Resident Snow and Ice Removal:

All residents and business owners are responsible for snow and ice removal from public sidewalks adjacent to their properties within 24 hours of a snow event. Please clear all corners with crosswalks. Handicap accessible ramps should be cleared out enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Visit the Village website for more details.
Snow Storm Refuse/Recycling Cart Placement:

During winter months, refuse and recycling carts should continue to be placed within 3 feet of the curb or alley edge and 3 feet from any side or rear obstruction, including other carts, trees, garage, fence, or any other elements.

In the event of snow, residents are encouraged to utilize their driveway apron or clear a portion of their parkway for cart placement. Snow and ice must be cleared around the cart(s) as well as the lid. Please do not place your refuse and recycling carts in the street during the winter months as it can affect proper snow removal by our Village snow plow crews. Proper placement is imperative to automated collection.

Community Spotlight:
From the Whitefish Bay Garden Club - One Grateful Gardener, a Thanksgiving poem by Darcie Warren:

The gardener’s nail polish hides dried dirt,/ A preference to feel soil with bare hands./ She observes tunneling pink worms that squirt/ Gray casts in new homes for stretching root strands.

Notice the seasons change, the four main ones -/ Yes! But also, notice nature’s perfect/ Micro-seasons. A Plant’s cycle reruns -/ Sprout, true leaf, blooms and fruit - she can predict./

Share the harvest with family and friends!/ Split bulbs and offer seedpods to neighbors!/ Teach kids about “dig in the dirt” weekends./ Learn from the Mother and masters’ labors./

Cultivate beautiful flowers and food./ Find joy in the garden. Peace. Gratitude.
NSHD Healthy Highlight
Pancreatic Cancer Month:

The pancreas is responsible for making insulin and other hormones which help the body use or store energy from food. According to DHS, risk factors for pancreatic cancer include:
  • Smoking is responsible for 20% to 30% of pancreatic cancer and is the most avoidable risk factor,
  • Diabetes increases likelihood of developing pancreatic cancer than those who are not diabetic,
  • Family history can contribute to the increased risk of developing the disease, especially if a mother, father, sister, or brother has pancreatic cancer history,
  • Inflammation of the pancreas is known as pancreatitis and can be painful. Having pancreatitis for a long period of time may increase pancreatic cancer risk.
  • Obesity (those who are overweight or obese) are slightly more at risk. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, and exercising can help reduce risk.

It is important to note many people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer do not have these risk factors and many who do have known risk factors do not develop the disease.

Currently there are no established guidelines for preventing pancreatic cancer, but avoiding risk factors may help decrease likelihood. Early detection is important!
