Dog Holiday Hazards and Safety Reminders

While the holidays are a fun and festive time, they can also present many hazards for our four-legged friends.  There are, however, many ways you can prepare yourself - and your Lab! - so you can all enjoy this time of the year.

Below are links to several resources that can help keep you and your pets healthy this holiday season.

GGLRR is proud to participate in the Pet Food Express Holiday Shopping Spree!

We are excited to announce some cheerful news for the holidays: GGLRR is a proud recipient of this year's Pet Food Express Holiday Shopping Spree fundraiser!

The 2020 Holiday Shopping Spree campaign will run from Monday November 23 through Sunday December 27.  It will follow a donation-to-gift card model.  Customers can contribute any amount as part of their in-store or online purchase and will designate that it go to either a "general fund" or to GGLRR specifically.  The "general fund" will be split equally among all 115 participating rescues and shelters, while each partner's individual donations will go entirely to them.  Once the campaign has ended and all donations have been tallied, GGLRR will receive their total in the form of special Pet Food Express gift cards.

Our GGLRR community is incredibly dedicated, committed, and generous in supporting our mission.  We thank you for all you have done to support the Labs during this unprecedented year and invite you to learn more about this opportunity using the link below.

Thank you to all the owners and photographers who submitted photos of their Labs for this calendar.  Each of the featured Labs was adopted from GGLRR.  See them enjoying their new lives in beautiful locations throughout northern California.

Gilly
8-month-old neutered male Black Lab mix, 50 lbs.

This little cutie was abandoned in San Francisco - tied out to a pole next to a bag of food.  He is bouncing back from that devastating incident and rapidly settling into his foster home.

Gilly is house trained and sleeps nicely in his crate at night (after a few protests).  He gives an occasional whine or woof to passing dogs and a bit of a wander towards them but not a strong lunge or jump.  Barks when he hears human voices and car doors or when the neighbor is hanging up laundry on the fence.  He barks when people come into the house but is friendly to them after getting to know them.

We are working on his door etiquette and he pulls strongly on leash though this is greatly reduced walking with a correction collar.  His play style with other dogs is fairly rowdy and assertive (paws on shoulders, body checks) and he can be a pesky youngster who keeps coming back even after another dog tells him no.  We're thinking he might do best as an only dog in the home.  Given how much Gilly likes to grab and shake his toys, he's probably not a good fit for a home with cats.  Given his size and energy level, he may not be the best for a home with small children.  We'd like a home that has some prior experience with large puppies and where someone is home for a good portion of the day.

Gilly is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and neutered.  We plan to get Gilly a heartworm test.  He is located in Santa Clara.

Shadow
12 month-old neutered male Black Lab mix, 65 lbs.

When he arrived at the end of September, Shadow was a young and very exuberant dog.  But after being in a calm environment and getting lots of exercise, he is doing great.  He wants to please.  He sits and waits before eating as well as entering and exiting doorways.  He also takes treats gently.  He learns routines quickly and loves tummy rubs.

At times, he can be high energy but is learning to calm down.  He sleeps quietly through the entire night in his crate.  Does well on his two walks per day.  Likes other people and dogs.  Since being neutered at the end of October, he does much less jumping.

In the last month, he has really started to enjoy ball chasing.  Inside the home, he is quiet.  He enjoys playing with his toys and sleeping.  If he hears someone outside, he has a loud bark but stops once he know who is there.

Shadow is neutered, current on vax, microchipped, and heartworm negative.  Shadow is located in San Jose.

Lucy

"Lucy is doing very well. She's such a spoiled little lady. She's about 8 1/2 months and 65 lbs. She is so relaxed and blends in with our family so well at home. She's so smart and picks up training quickly. Although, because of COVID, we had a difficult time socializing with other pups and the only issue we were running into was her excitement when seeing other dogs when at the park/on walks/at the beach. I started taking her to puppy socials facilitated by 2 trainers every week and she's doing so well. She has learned appropriate boundaries/play. We're finally getting to the point where she can be off leash because we're confident in her recall and hit a major milestone letting her off leash at the beach last week. She's the PERFECT pet for us and we're so in love with her. Thank you again and always for choosing our family to take her home with us!!"

Best,
Victoria, Dustin, Everett, Makenzie & Lucy

Scout

"Scout is doing great! He is quite popular at Yappy Hour at the local high school. He gets along with all the other dogs and their humans. He is getting better about walking on a leash and will sometimes pass other dogs without barking. He is a wonderful dog and we all love him."

(He is not supposed to get on the furniture but it is hard to get angry at that sweet face.)

"This is Copper who we adopted in July of 2013. He is 13 now and going strong!"

Thank you,
Maureen and Marc
