The Hail Mary Club gives the Garces Gym Lobby and Restrooms a Makeover !

A Message from the  Hail Mary Club
The Hail Mary Club was founded by a group of Garces alumni, parents and supporters to help "Enhance the Garces Experience". This enhancement has taken many forms so far such as: assisting athletic teams with equipment, helping the student body with rooter buses, upgrading the Campbell Field House and weight room, replacing the plaque on the Father Garces Statue; assisting in ticket sales for the Garces BBQ; regrading and smoothing the track; and most recently the refurbishment of the gymnasium lobby and restrooms. The gym project has two important components that were vital in our decision to support it: 1) it serves as a major gateway into Garces for students, family, friends and the public; and 2) the project gives us all a small glimpse into the untapped potential for networking within the best group of alumni and supporters in Bakersfield.  To undertake this project the HMC recruited a group of donors that were able to offer cash donations, and another group of donors that offered donated materials, skilled labor and oversight of the project. If you have not seen the finished product, I encourage you to do so. It's an astonishing upgrade to one of the oldest buildings on campus. Working together we can make great things happen.

Gym Lobby Under Construction
We removed the small wood trophy case and built a wall display.  We also replaced the flooring, ceiling tiles, and lighting.
New Garces Gym Lobby
The new lobby has a display case that spans the wall along with a mural that says "Garces Memorial Where Champions Are Made!"
Girls Restroom Before
The girls restroom was in pretty bad shape with a vanity that was falling apart and stall doors that were missing locks.
Girls Restroom During
They completely gutted the girls restroom.
Girls Restroom After
The new girls restroom has a double sink vanity, a green granite counter top, hand dryers, new lighting, and new roomier stalls.
Boys Restroom Before
After 62 years of use, you can imagine the need for a renovated boys restroom.
Boys Restroom During
Just like the girls restroom, the boys restroom was completely gutted.
Boys Restroom After
The boys restroom has new stalls & urinals, and two sinks along with new flooring, lighting, hand dryers, and ceiling tiles.

Justin Finch '08
Garces Memorial Hero
Justin Finch came back to work at Garces last year after playing Men's Soccer in college and graduating from CSUB. He will complete a masters in Public Administration in May. He is currently teaching Strong Body, Boys PE, Computers, and the STEM Program's Intro to Engineering class. He is also the PE Dept. Chair and the Head Coach of the Boys Soccer Program. Garces knew bringing him back would be great for the school and even better for the students, but no one knew just how important the decision to bring Justin on to the staff would be.  A couple of months ago during marching band practice, a student fell unconscious.  No pulse. No breath sounds.  Justin was with his strong body class and one of the band kids ran and got him. Justin immediately began CPR and kept at it for 15 minutes until the EMTs arrived and took over.  While it looked grim for the student as he had been down for so long without a pulse, he has defied the odds and has made a full recovery thanks to Justin's bravery and the prayers of the students, faculty, staff and families of Garces.
Making a Difference in the World Jessica Feghali '09

At an age when many college graduates are still struggling to find work in their chosen fields and move out on their own, Jessica Feghali '09 is a program director for the International Refugee Assistance Project's Lebanon office, which she helped establish about 14 months ago.  To date, the group has resettled more than 2,000 refugees in eight different countries but, with offices in New York, Jordan and Lebanon, it can provide legal assistance virtually anywhere. Jessica, a 2011 cum laude UCLA graduate with a bachelor's degree in political science, earned her law degree from Fordham University School of Law in New York.

Garces Indie Artist - Crimson Skye

Crimson Skye Hochhalter is a 2013 Garces graduate.  While at Garces, Crimson was the 2012 Valley Champion in Girls Tennis in Doubles.  She is now a familiar performer at the monthly First Friday in Bakersfield.   Crystal is a singer songwriter who recently released her latest EP, "Blending Colors" on December 8th. It joins an ever-growing library of self-produced and released recordings. "I've never been more proud of myself since I decided to write my first album and then later decided to start sharing my creations live. I just constantly have to remind myself that no one else can do what I do because they're not me. When I believe that, the sea of other artists is irrelevant and it is something to encourage rather than compete with."  But behind all that determination is Crimson Skye, whose mother, Lea Brown, died from breast cancer at the age of 29. Skye credits her late mom for inspiring her to find her inner voice as a comfort from the pain of such a loss. "Blending Colors" features three songs: "Red," "Green" and "Yellow." Clocked in at just under 20 minutes, it's a creative blend of interests collected through her life to the present. She also plays all instruments, including guitar, banjo and djembe drum. Production quality is minimal and suited to her artistic reach. "It's a journey, one that you can experience on a car ride from one side of Bakersfield to another. It consists of thoughts and emotions expressed through sounds created by steel strings, goat skin, wood, my mouth and hands. I bought a banjo a few months ago at a pawn shop downtown and I ended up using it to write and record a song on the album."  "Blending Colors" is available now for download and streaming at crimsonskye.bandcamp.com. There, you can also download or stream previous releases. For more info and music, visit facebook.com/crimsonskyesounds
Garces 2016 Hall of Honor Nominations

It's that time of year!  The Garces Alumni Board is accepting nominations for the 2016 Hall of Honor.  Only nominees can be considered for induction so please submit nominees who you believe should be included in the Hall of Honor for their accomplishments and/or support of our school. Nominations are due by January 29th.
2015 Hall of Honor Inductee Highlight
Mr. Gino Valpredo

Gino Valpredo was one of the most successful student-athletes to ever attend Garces contributing to multiple valley championships in both football and baseball.  Gino graduated in 1988 but not before setting several school football records, some that still stand today.  Gino still holds the school records for career rushing attempts with 636 and for field goals in a season with seven.  Gino set several school records that stood for almost two decades - single season rushing, career rushing, single season rushing attempts, single season rushing/receiving, career rushing/receiving, career total points scored.  During his football career with Garces, Gino amassed 3,630 rushing yards, 4,165 total yards, and scored 308 points for the Rams.  He played on three League Championship football teams and three Valley Championship football teams in 1985, 1986 and 1987.  He was named All-League in football in 1985, 1986 and 1987 and named All-Area in 1986 and 1987.  Gino also excelled in baseball and played on three League Championship teams in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and two Valley Championship teams in 1987 and 1988.  Gino was named All-League in baseball in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and All-Area in 1987 and 1988.

After graduating from Garces, Gino went on to play football for four years of college.  He played at Bakersfield College Renegades where they were the J.C. National Champions and Gino was named Honorable Mention All-American.  He left BC in the spring of 1989 with a scholarship toArizona State University.  Gino redshirted his first year at ASU and started for the Sun Devils at fullback in 1991 and 1992.  Gino graduated from ASU in 1992 with a BA in Sociology.

After college graduation, Gino returned to Bakersfield and began working with his mother, Tonia Valpredo, and sisters, Monica Sacco and Lanette Caratan, at the family business, Luigi's Italian Restaurant and Delicatessen.  Gino has been instrumental in expanding their operations to include hosting banquets, catering, and new menu options.  He is an ambassador for Garces and has been very supportive of, and generous to, Garces over the years.  You can often find Gino on the sidelines at Garces Rams football games.  Not only does he support Garces through his family's restaurant, he continuously donates his time and his talents to our school.  Gino, along with a group of alumni and friends of Garces, established the Hail Mary Club in 2013, with all funds raised going to the betterment of the Garces Memorial.  Gino is also very active with and supportive of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Gino is married to Sandy and they have four children, two at Garces: Christian and Cole; and two future Rams: Nico and Angelina.
Garces Alumni Scholarship Fund

The Alumni Scholarship Fund is a wonderful way to give back to Garces for those alumni who want to see more alumni send their children to Garces.  The Alumni Scholarship Fund will be manged by the Garces Memorial Alumni Board.

By now you should have received a letter about the Garces Annual Fund Drive (AFD).  The AFD is critical to the operating success of Garces and its ability to offer a quality Catholic, college preparatory education. We hope you will prayerfully consider making a gift to the Garces Fund this year. Click here for list of alumni who have already supported this year's fund drive.
