Overview

The December Healthy Cass County meeting focused on local food systems, producer collaboration, and barriers to marketing and distribution, with an emphasis on how strengthening access to local foods supports community health and wellness. The meeting brought together local producers, community organizations, and partners to discuss challenges, opportunities, and strategies for improving local food access across Cass County.

Attendance & Participation

The meeting included participants representing:

  • Local food producers and farm businesses
  • Nonprofit and volunteer organizations
  • Cass County Extension & Outreach
  • Community members interested in food access, agriculture, and wellness

Attendees shared experiences related to food production, sales models, and community engagement, contributing to a collaborative and solution-focused discussion.

Key Discussion Themes

Local Food Production & Sales Models

Participants discussed a variety of production and distribution approaches, including:

  • On-farm stores and porch pick-ups
  • Farmers markets and Produce in the Park events
  • Delivery routes serving communities across Cass County
  • Farm-to-table deliveries, food baskets, and inspected meat processing
  • Use of commercial kitchens and value-added production

These models varied in scale and capacity but shared a common goal of increasing access to locally produced foods.

Marketing & Outreach Challenges

A significant theme was the challenge of marketing local foods effectively, particularly:

  • Reaching older populations who rely more on word-of-mouth than digital marketing
  • Limited use of websites and social media by some producers
  • Reduced visibility and sales opportunities during winter months

Community-based events and shared promotional efforts were identified as important tools for increasing awareness and access.

Seasonal & Infrastructure Barriers

Participants discussed barriers faced during off-season months, including:

  • Limited indoor spaces for selling local products
  • Reduced consumer traffic compared to peak market seasons
  • Storage, preservation, and processing needs

Ideas included expanding indoor sales opportunities, scaling home and community garden production, and strengthening collaboration to support year-round access to local foods.

Next Steps

Healthy Cass County identified the following next steps to continue advancing local food access and community wellness:

  • Educate the public on the importance of local foods and produce and their role in overall health, including connections to chronic disease prevention, nutrition, and community well-being
  • Continue conversations around collaborative marketing and shared promotion strategies
  • Explore infrastructure solutions that support year-round access to local foods
  • Strengthen partnerships between producers, organizations, and community spaces

Closing

The December meeting reinforced that access to local foods is a critical component of community health. By supporting education, collaboration, and infrastructure development, Healthy Cass County will continue working to strengthen the local food system and improve health outcomes for Cass County residents.
