Extension Announced for Homeownership

Pre-Applications

Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay offers qualifying households the opportunity to purchase a new, affordable home in Santa Cruz or Monterey County.

Our current homeowner opportunity is at Evan Circle in Watsonville, and the pre-application deadline has been extended to January 5, 2026.

The process begins with a pre-application, which helps us confirm eligibility based on factors such as income, U.S. legal residency, and first-time homebuyer status. If you meet the initial criteria, you’ll be invited to submit a full application, including a credit check, background check, and additional income verification.

Basic Homeownership Qualifications Include:

  • Ability to receive an affordable mortgage
  • Household income below 80% of the Area Median Income for Santa Cruz County
  • Good credit
  • Willingness to contribute 500 hours of sweat equity
  • Completion of a homeowner education course
  • All household members must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents
  • Demonstrated need for improved housing

We’re committed to making the path to affordable homeownership accessible for local families.

Affordable Homeownership Wins Big, But Faces Uncertainty

Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay Celebrates Securing Over $2.5 Million in Down Payment Assistance Through Final CalHome Awards, Urges Governor to Restore Critical Funding for Affordable Homeownership

Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay is celebrating more than $2.5 million in newly awarded funding for Monterey County homebuyers through the final round of the State of California’s CalHome and Joe Serna programs. The organization joins Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) in recognizing this final allocation of CalHome funding; one of California’s most important and longstanding programs supporting affordable homeownership for lower-income families.

Across the state, Habitat affiliates secured over $46 million in CalHome awards, which together will build and preserve 472 homes in 16 California communities. For Monterey County, these funds will significantly expand homeownership opportunities and help working families build stability, independence, and long-term financial security.

Honoring Allie Wilson's Years of Service to Habitat Monterey Bay

After more than eight years of dedicated service, we are celebrating the retirement of Allie, Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay’s remarkable Volunteer Coordinator.

During her time with Habitat, Allie built strong relationships and thoughtful systems that generated hundreds of volunteer hours each year. Her warm, personal approach made volunteers feel welcomed, valued, and essential to our mission, and many became lifelong supporters and friends as a result.

Allie has been the driving force behind countless Habitat moments. She coordinated volunteers for auctions, home dedications, build celebrations, and special events. She also represented Habitat Monterey Bay at community gatherings, sharing our mission throughout the region.

Allie organized group builds with corporate partners and student groups, including Granite Construction, Driscoll’s, Bay Federal, Wells Fargo, Santa Cruz County Bank, and students from UCSC, UC Berkeley, and CSU Monterey Bay. She also led our annual Women’s Builds and Board Builds. Just as importantly, Allie ensured every volunteer received proper safety training, helping to keep our worksites welcoming, safe, and inclusive for all.

Beyond the build site, Allie brought care and kindness to every detail. She coordinated lunch deliveries from local church members to nourish our construction crews and lift spirits when it mattered most. Each year, she also planned one of our most anticipated traditions: the Volunteer Appreciation Event, often a picnic at Harvey West Park, where volunteers could come together to celebrate their shared commitment to Habitat’s mission. This year, she also joined the Golden Hammer crew at the Volunteer Center celebration at the Coconut Grove Ballroom, an example of the deep friendships formed through years of service.

Allie, your enthusiasm for this work is unmatched, and your impact on Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay is immeasurable. We are grateful beyond words for your dedication, leadership, and heart.

As you begin this next chapter, we wish you a joyful and well-earned retirement, spending time with your grandson, continuing to create beautiful jewelry, volunteering at the Art Center and Jazz Festival, and, of course, staying connected to Habitat.

Finding A Home in Santa Cruz: Gus & Adela’s Journey Through Mortgage Assistance

New Beginnings for Gus and Adela

Since moving into their new home through Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay’s CalHome Mortgage Assistance Program, Gus and Adela have been settling into a new rhythm; one filled with stability, more space, and a growing sense of community. Their ten-unit neighborhood is coming to life as families move in and begin connecting.

“This home gave us stability, space, and the chance to stay close to family.”

For three years, the family lived together in a one-bedroom ADU. It was safe, but too small, and they feared they might have to leave Santa Cruz entirely. The CalHome program changed that, allowing them to remain close to the place they were raised and near the grandparents who support them with childcare, which makes budgeting and saving for financial security possible.

The home buying process wasn’t easy, but the program’s guidance, including a 10-hour homebuyer education course, helped them navigate each step with confidence. Their story shows that homeownership in Santa Cruz County is possible with support and opportunity.

Now, life in their new home feels full and joyful. They take walks as a family, visit the beach and parks, enjoy being close to the library, and best of all, their daughter finally has her own room. Gus and Adela are building a future rooted in the community they love.
