Dear Friends and Supporters of Saint John’s:

The holidays are an exciting time at Saint John's! Our wonderful volunteers are in full force donating and wrapping gifts, preparing and serving delicious meals and hosting festive holiday parties. We are grateful to all of our supporters for their generosity and kindness toward our families. You are an important part of our success at Saint John's!

We celebrated the graduation of 13 women from our Employment Training Program at our December 5th Guest Chef Dinner. Each of them has been working hard to improve their professional skills, the art of resume writing and interviewing, and have been working at their respective jobs for at least 30 days. They are well on their way to independence, stability and supporting themselves and their children. We are very proud of their accomplishments!

Happy Holidays!
Marc Cawdrey, Interim CEO

Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Mark Johnson
Dr. Mark Johnson worked as an internal medicine physician for 31 years. During this time he experienced a lot of pain and illness both through his patients' lives as well as his own. Twenty five years ago, to help deal with past abuse, depression and stress he turned to music and art (painting and sculpture) which led to a lifelong passion. Since December of 2008, he has brought his talent in serving others and expressing himself through art to Saint John's.

During one of his weekly Friday afternoon painting classes with the ladies, he explained the program. "The theme of our classes is light into darkness. I only have three rules for the women: 1) Paint your mood, 2) Tell your story, and 3) Put yourself in the story. The goal is to enjoy the process."

Each woman at Saint John's is required to participate in the art program during the first 30 days at Saint John's, but most choose to continue well beyond that first month. Some have a natural talent, some took painting classes years ago, and many are just learning to paint for the first time. All are welcome and all are encouraged by Dr. Mark's silly sense of humor and constant positive feedback. "Painting is an easier way than writing to express your emotions," Dr. Mark shares. "What you are feeling is expressed and poured out onto the canvas."

Dr. Mark clearly has a passion for this work. He loves being with the women and freely shares his personal stories with them. "You are one of us," they tell him. He was also wounded and expressing himself through the arts has helped him to heal. We are so blessed to have him here with us.

Blog Post:
Sweet Dreams Come True
At the age of 27, Whitnee M. was a single mother of two living in an abusive relationship. With her children safely staying with their father, Whitnee unfortunately followed her then boyfriend down a dark path of drug addiction and homelessness. It wasn’t until two years later as she sat staring at her children’s school pictures that she realized that something needed to change.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE -
REBUILDING A LIFE, ONE BRICK AT A TIME
In 2017 we purchased and renovated an 11,000-square-foot building adjacent to our campus, allowing us to increase our capacity to serve from 180 to 270 women and children per day.

WITH YOUR HELP, WE ARE BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE - Naming a commemorative brick offers a great tribute to an individual, family or corporation – connecting their names with the meaningful work that will be conducted at Saint John’s Program for Real Change.

It may be just a brick, but it symbolizes a step toward a life of independence, security and happiness.

To purchase your engraved brick today, please visit:  SAINTJOHNSPROGRAM.ORG/BRICK

For more specifics, please call Sasha Wirth or Bethany Knudsen at 916-453-1482.
Today is a Perfect Day for a New Beginning

Together, we will give more women and children the opportunity to start a new life - a life filled with hope, joy and endless opportunities. With your gift today, you will provide a family at Saint John's not only a safe home, but also a hand up through an educational program that empowers mothers to provide for themselves and their families.
