House Notes | December 2022
The Eastham Family

The Eastham Family has been part of our larger Family House family since 2019 when one of their sons received treatment for hypoglycemia at UCSF. When their youngest son, Knox, was born in April 2022, he also had to come to UCSF to be treated for gastroschisis – a condition where a baby’s intestines are born extending outside of the body. All six of them (mom, dad, and three of Knox’s siblings!) come to San Francisco from Denair, over 100 miles away.

Hear them tell their story of how Family House provided an environment for their family to be together during a crisis.
In Memoriam: Mary Lou Youngerman

We’re saddened to share that Mary Lou Youngerman, 78, passed away in November 2022 from a massive stroke. Mary Lou was a UCSF nurse who served on the original Family House Board of Directors.

From our beginnings, Mary Lou was our #1 booster and never gave up her passion for Family House's mission and community. "She made a huge difference and I hope we can all keep Mary Lou’s special spirit in our hearts," CEO Alexandra Morgan reflected.

In the words of Ann Leonardo, another original Family House Board member, “This is the end of an era. It was a different time in the early days with a lot of sweat equity and love to make Family House a reality. Garage sales and board work sessions to make the first building on Irving Street habitable for the families who quickly filled the house. We thought we had done well netting $50K on our first gala, but it was really a celebration for all the hard work that had been accomplished by so many caring people whose shared vision of compassion became Family House.”

Mary Lou’s last wishes included that gifts be made to Family House in her memory.
