IAWF would like to recognize exceptional member Leyla Vokhshoori. Leyla has over 25 years of management and retail experience, has worked in numerous philanthropy projects, and is currently the Vice President, General Manager of Neiman Marcus.  F ounder and President of IAWF, Mariam Khosravani sat down with Leyla to discuss career advice, balancing personal and professional life, as well as Leyla's preferred leadership style.

Check out the interview below!
M: What advice would you give women considering a career in retail?
L: People, people, people. Retail is all about people. You need to have the ability to connect with others and be flexible. There needs to be a level of passion for wanting to serve others, thinking of ways to create an experience and making a difference. Ability to adapt to change is key in a world that technology is moving at the speed of light.

M: What is the biggest career mistake you made?
L:  Thinking that I could do it alone. I soon realized that it's best if I follow great ideas. It's best if I listen. And it's best if I surround myself with people that are better and smarter than me.

M: What is the best way to stay focused at work?
L:  Truthfully, it's a daily reminder. Of course you are going to have small setbacks and at times major setbacks but you have to be able to shake it off and remind yourself of the big picture and the global goal. What counts is the effort we are putting in; it's the effort that drives the results. It's not about continuously thinking if you are going to win or not.  What counts is the effort.

M: What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were younger?
L: I can't do it alone. When I was younger, I definitely thought I was invincible. In my mind I thought I could be a superwoman, a mom, a wife, a daughter, leading a team and a productive member of the society. I soon realized if I want to fulfill 50% of my responsibilities to its fullest. I can't do it alone and I need a strong support system.

M: What has gotten you through tough times?
L: Having a supportive family and a talented team that truly believe in the cause. Tough times are unavoidable, it's like riding the Ferris wheel of life. Understanding that some of our best experiences and growth, come from experiencing hardship. Reminding ourselves what counts is the effort regardless of the outcome and the results.
M: Now the challenging questions: How do you think a woman can successfully balance her career and personal life?
L: Women have so much to offer, we are so intuitive and so capable. Key is finding the balance by being present in the moment. We miss so many opportunities around us by looking way too much in the past and way too much into the future.

M: What's the most important thing to remember when it comes to your personal life?
L:  There's one of me. Balancing and reminding myself of my responsibilities . Replenishing ourselves is so important. We are on stage all the time playing so many different roles, and we play all of it very well. Being able to be present and not worry about other things for that hour that I am with my daughter. Being fully engaged in what's in front of us.

M: How do you see your leadership style?
L:  I often get asked this question and I think the best way I can describe it is "Tom Sawyer."  He was able to get the neighborhood kids to paint his fence! Now that's a talent.  The only difference is I stay and paint as well; I try to lead by example.

M: Do you have any messages for Iranian-American women?
L: Find what you love, go after it, and don't give up. Every time you encounter an obstacle, take a step back and ask yourself, "What is the lesson in this for me?" It's much easier said than done, but definitely has helped me personally get over many hurdles. Don't give up. Just think of your effort, push forward, and believe in whatever it is that you are doing.

M: If you could start over and do it all over again in your career, what would have been your favorite job?
L: My daughter always asks that question! She says, "Well, if you had to do it all over, would you do it differently?" The answer is no. I would stay true to what I'm doing today, I love working with people. We live in a world of influence, and as a leader you are continually influencing.
