Lottie Moon, a Southern Baptist missionary to China from 1873 to her death in 1912, is a name that resonates during the Christmas season. Her life and work exemplify the unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel, even at great personal sacrifice.
Moon responded to God’s call by joining the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. She settled in the province of Shandong, dedicating her life to sharing the gospel, teaching, and addressing the physical and spiritual needs of the Chinese people. Her adaptability to their culture, fluency in their language, and adoption of their dress and customs made her message more relatable and her ministry more impactful.
One of Moon’s most remarkable qualities was her sacrificial generosity. Despite the challenges of living in a foreign land, she often shared her food with the hungry and used her personal funds to support those in need. This selflessness took a toll on her health, leading to malnutrition and illness, ultimately causing her death on December 24, 1912. Her life and passing serve as a testament to her unwavering dedication to the mission of spreading the gospel.
Today, we honor Moon’s legacy through our Lottie Moon Christmas offering. As Southern Baptists, we believe that our denomination has the most effective strategy for reaching the world with the gospel. It is a privilege to participate in the work of these remarkable missionaries, who are diligently fulfilling the Great Commission. All the funds collected through the Lottie Moon Christmas offering are directly allocated to support IMB missionaries as they take the gospel to the farthest reaches of the globe.
