December Lynx Lowdown

From the President

Greetings. Lynx,

You’ll see we have a shorter Lynx Lowdown issue this month as faculty are now outside their days of responsibility and the rest of us are trying to clear our desks before the holidays.

In the December Town Hall, Marsha provided a 2025-26 budget update. While revenues are down in tuition dollars, we’ve been conservative in filling positions, so we are still on track to end the year in balance.

We are turning our attention to next year’s budget and the opportunities and risks for revenues and expenses.

In January, our NECHE report is due, and it is coming together well thanks to massive efforts among faculty, staff, and administrators.

We continue to work on our strategic goals, most recently engaging the NHTI Advisory Board in a discussion around the ten draft goals. We’ll finalize the goals in early spring.

Academic & Workforce Education’s continued work on the Curriculum Portfolio Review, such as filling the FT architecture faculty position and starting the development of a Healthcare Management degree, are examples of NHTI’s focus on growth and innovation.

A major success of the ONE (online) Project for Spring 2026 is the deployment of a common Canvas shell across all online classes. For 2026-27, the ONE project is collaborating with the colleges to create a unified schedule of online classes.

We have fully entered the months of greater darkness in our northern portion of the hemisphere, so thank you for the light you bring into this world through your hearts and hands.

See you in 2026!

NHTI FY26 Budget Summary

The FY26 operating budget reflects a largely stable financial position, with revenues and expenses both projected to finish slightly below budget and an overall near break-even outcome. Total projected revenue is approximately $160,204 below budget, while expenses are projected to be $160,769 under budget, resulting in a favorable offset.

Tuition remains NHTI’s largest and most influential revenue source. Year-to-date tuition collections are tracking at approximately 52% of the FY26 budget, with projected year-end tuition revenue falling short of target by roughly $111,000. Fee revenue is slightly above expectations, while waivers continue to exceed plan. Non-credit revenue delays are primarily due to program timing, and Early College enrollment softness remains a contributing factor to revenue variance

On the expense side, salaries and benefits represent the dominant cost category and are tracking close to plan. Benefit costs are favorable due to vacancies and health insurance savings. Other operating expenses remain controlled, though contracted maintenance, leases, and bad debt are higher than budgeted. The increase in bad debt is largely attributable to timing changes, with receivables being sent earlier to the collection agency.

Key financial risks include enrollment softness, rising waivers, and bad debt. These are partially offset by benefit savings, disciplined spending, and strong partnerships. Continued focus on enrollment stabilization, operational efficiencies, sustainable staffing, and student experience remains critical to maintaining fiscal stability.

From Faculty Council

Another rip-roaring good time was had by all faculty in attendance and here are the highlights:

Part of Term Problem. Currently there are a staggering 22 or 23 parts of term for summer causing academic calendar chaos and headaches for the registrar.

Conduct Chronicles: Chad reminded faculty they have the power to issue alerts in Navigate for conduct problems. The golden rule for behavior? Document, document, document.

Security Rascality: The Lockdown without a Rave Alert caused a stir. Administration understands and is working on fixes.

Meeting Mayhem: to combat the dread of the Welcome Back calendar, a plea was made for a reduction in meetings, so faculty aren't hopelessly overbooked.

Online Odyssey: The One NHCC is moving ahead with a single Canvas template for all 100% online classes.

  • Want in? Copy the template from Canvas and import your course
  • Drop-in sessions are planned and Kelly Luedtke will share a video guide soon
  • Department chairs are charged with being the template police, tasked with ensuring all 100% online adjuncts are using it.

Get some rest over the winter break. Also, ask Chad about his pug tattoo.

Faculty Spotlight

Our own Beth Wilkes has earned an Honorable Mention in American Society for Microbiology’s 2025 Outstanding Instructor Awards! Beth was recognized for publishing with her undergraduate students in MRA as part of hands-on research experiences she builds into her courses.

"Many students enter my classes with limited lab experience, and by the end of the year, I see them grow into confident researchers capable of presenting their findings clearly and effectively."

Do you have a story you think should be shared with our community? An outstanding student you want to brag about? Something unique happening in your department or class? A fellow staff member that you want to give a shout-out to?
