My name is Mike Van Oort.  I am the Technology Director for the Forest City Community School District. It is increasingly difficult for parents and educators to keep up with the ways that our children are using new and ever changing technologies. Our children are immersed in a society that has become dependent on powerful computers, including smartphones, iPads, interactive online games and virtual communities. Websites such as Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, to name but a few, offer fantastic opportunities for communication and social connections.  However, we also understand the dangers that can come from using the many social media and gaming technologies. Over the next several months, I will be providing a variety parent resources concerning some important digital citizenship topics. If you have any questions, please contact me mvanoort@forestcity.k12.ia.us.

8th Grade Students Are Giving Back
A student-designed gift tag for the hats
Several 8th grade students have learned to knit and are enjoying  making hats for the Forest City Giving Tree. Students come in on their own time and during study hall in school to work on the hats. As of this newsletter publication they have made 61 hats! They plan to distribute them as families are picking up their gifts as part of the Giving Tree project. Teacher Jeri Edel got them started and now students are teaching each other.  Thank you for giving back!
The second trimester began for your student on Monday, November 14th.  That signals the start of a new grading period and a new Exploratory class for our students.  The sixth graders are now actively involved in Art or Spanish.  The seventh graders are working in Life Skills class and the eighth graders are now taking Technology Literacy.

We’re pleased with our attendance rate of 95% at conferences on November 7th and 8th. We appreciate families putting their child’s education at a high priority and taking the time to meet with school personnel.  We know that one important factor in student success is communication between home and school.  The Parent-Teacher-Student conference is one way for that important communication to take place.

Upcoming Events
  • The Middle School choirs and bands will perform on December 19 beginning at 6:30 PM in the High School gymnasium.
  • BrickStreet Theater performances of A Christmas Story the weekends of December 9 and December 14. BrickStreet Theatre
  • Students will be dismissed on December 22nd at 2:00 PM and return on January 3, 2017. Principal note: I sincerely hope that your family will have the opportunity to spend time together during the students’ break.  Although maintaining a close relationship with your young adolescent can be challenging, parents are still the most influential people regarding their child’s values and performance at school.
