Narragansett Educator Highlight

Each month, we are happy to share a little more about one of our educators here at our schools. We hope this will help better connect you with the wonderful individuals who work hard to give our students the best experience each year, while learning fun facts about them.
Kathleen Degnan, NES Intensive Resource Teacher

How long have you been working within the Narragansett School System and what do you do?
I started at Narragansett Elementary School this past September as an Intensive Resource teacher. Before that, I was a special education teacher for three years at an elementary school in Tennessee. I actually started my career at Narragansett Pier School as a long-term substitute, so it’s great to be back!

Where are you originally from?
I am originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, and moved to Rhode Island when I was in third grade. My father’s job brought my family back to Providence, Rhode Island, and we eventually moved to Narragansett in my freshman year of high school.

What is your favorite part about working at your school?
My favorite part of working at NES is greeting my students every morning. I am able to share my enthusiasm and excitement with them as we begin each day at school ready to learn together.

Do you have any talents/hobbies outside of the school day or during the summer that you like to enjoy?
I was on the swim team at Providence College for four years and I still love to swim! In the summertime, I enjoy swimming and body surfing at Narragansett Town Beach. In the winter, I teach swim lessons to all different age groups.

What is one thing that your students and staff may not know about you?
I have three handsome nephews (Aidan, Camden & Ethan) and two beautiful nieces (Fiona & Gwen.)

This specific theme is their Lego League challenge for the year with this interview helping the Lego League teams solidify their ideas for their research projects. The research project is one of the three pillars of First Lego League (FLL.) The others are Core Values and of course, The Robot.

It was a very interactive opportunity that the students loved. Thanks to Vanessa Miller and staff who helped organize this!

Student Climate Change Assembly

On November 15th, sophomores Julia Highcove and Shelby Lefoley hosted an assembly for NHS freshman and sophomore students which included a live interaction event with the Inner Space Center at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO).

The students Skyped with scientists about the potential impacts of a changing Arctic due to global climate change. The event was the culmination of the Northwest Passage Project High School Institute which Julia, Shelby and NHS science teacher Kathy Couchon attended at the GSO. The institute brought together 6 teams (2 students and 1 teacher) from across the country for 4 days at the end of August to follow the Northwest Passage Project expedition across the Canadian Arctic.

While the expedition ended early when the ship ran aground, the students continued their interactions with the scientists and learned first hand about the water chemistry, ecosystems and animals, particularly seabirds and narwhals, of the Arctic region. This annual conference is the largest gathering of Earth Scientists in the world!
