Season's Greetings,

As the Fall session winds down, there are still a few special events coming up that we would like you to be aware of. Firstly, our Winter Schedule is now online and printed. Two additions to the schedule include another popular six-week Foundations series and a new All Levels class Tuesdays at 5:30 pm.

Our last free class of the year is happening this Sunday, December 9.  The Centenary Celebration for BKS Iyengar is coming up very soon as well, and KYH is celebrating. Details on all these events are below.
Also, included this month are two beautiful articles contributed by Krisna and Melissa on BKS Iyengar.

During this busy time of year, please take the time to nurture yourself. We wish everyone a blessed holiday season with peace in spirit and an abundance of health and wellness.

A Great Soul: BKS Iyengar
by Krisna Zawaduk

We all have our unique experience of BKS Iyengar. He did not know my name, or speak with me directly, though I am sure that he would have, had I the courage to approach him. We did exchange a "namaste" and mutual pranam on my first visit to Pune when my partner, myself and children (6 and 10), entered the RIMYI for registration. He gave us all a warm, welcoming smile and even the kids were in awe. Serendipitously, that first trip to meet the master was in July, and the Guru Purnima celebration fell on my birthday. This most unforgettable birthday gift came wrapped in music and tributes and a profound address by Guruji. The absolute crowning moment of that day though, was to bow down at his feet in gratitude and receive his blessing.

On Guruji's Centenary: A Ray of Light
by Melissa Perehudoff

"Come to class, I think you might like it", said my friend Deborah, 27 years ago.  I was suffering from stress in a challenging career, loneliness in a new town and emotional instability that comes with confusion and lack of support.  I was blessed with a strong, flexible body with slight scoliosis and a curious mind so what did I have to lose?  Soon I learned that what I had to gain was what BKS Iyengar described as the purpose of yoga, to develop the body, discipline the mind and stabilize the emotions in order to refine us as a whole.  In class, the teacher got me to align my body with precise instructions that cut through my sluggishness.  She expressed other ideas that were new to me.  "Let the consciousness touch every cell of your being."  These concepts did not make much sense at the beginning but now I can say that I have experienced vastness of consciousness in a pose or the full aliveness of my being after a particularly focused class.  The intelligence of the cells can be awakened and the connectivity of mind, breath and body can be experienced through asana.

Kelowna Yoga House students were blessed once again to experience the brilliance of Marlene Mawhinney's teaching in the November Workshop. Thank you to all who came out for the weekend.
Reflections from Day 4 of Workshop with Marlene

A New Spirit is Born

When the inner lights are turned on the mind knows that it can relax  from the bonds that tied it to a need for pleasures of excitation. Within the manger of the body, the new spirit proclaims the turning of the equinox and the joy not bound to anything without. A light of one-pointedness guides the pilgrim to the pleasures of tranquility.

May the everlasting pleasure be yours at this season of merriment, and may this season last for you an entire year, for the joy of a meditative spirit is not generated by the glitter of sounds and senses but is innate and is forever.

Season's greetings and remembrance of you.

  • Work Exchange:
We are in need of yogis who would like to help out KYH and benefit from an arrangement of work exchange (cleaning) for yoga classes.
We will consider students who have an established relationship (for example, three months with KYH), rather than newcomers to the studio.
