The First World Media Ban Passes Australian Parliament

Lakeside Global Institute, Gerry Vassar

“There have been consistent controversies about the impact that social media platforms are having on our youth. Since there have been little or no efforts by companies to limit the use of the platforms to adults, children who are capable of going online can have the exact same exposure as adults. The impact of some of the messaging on young kids has had some very difficult consequences to those children. Recognizing this, the Australian Parliament recently passed legislation that will not allow children below the age of 16 to hold accounts on platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram. The fines for violation range up to $50 million Australian dollars to these companies.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the law supported parents concerned by online harms to their children. ‘Platforms now have a social responsibility to ensure that the safety of our kids is a priority for them,’ Albanese told reporters." Read more.

Seeking Municipal Partners to House Montgomery County’s Older Adults

Montgomery County’s Office of Aging Services (OAS) hosted listening sessions and spoke to over 200 older adults to create a new mandatory four-year plan focused on providing for older adults in Montgomery County. Housing costs were identified as a big concern at these sessions. OAS is investigating ideas for providing affordable options, starting with Elder Cottage Housing Opportunity (ECHO).

ECHO cottages are small, detached manufactured residences temporarily placed in the side or rear yard of relatives or friends. This provides independence and privacy for its resident along with easy access to family or friends. When living requirements of the resident change, the cottage is relocated to the home of another host family. Funding is available from the Commonwealth to pay for a small number of cottages, and they are looking for places to put them in the county. This housing is likely a better fit for a rural community, and they are seeking a couple of volunteer municipalities as partners. If interested, please contact Jennifer Haeussler-Barnhart.
