Understanding Racial Disparities in Housing Webinar

PA Link and Housing First University Training

1/24/24, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Complimentary CEUs available

For decades, racial and ethnic minorities, especially Black and Indigenous persons, have experienced homelessness at much higher rates than their white counterparts. This disproportionate burden has a long history rooted in racialized policies that continue to affect people experiencing homelessness today. In this training, explore this history while examining the structural and individual factors driving the racialization of homelessness.

Presenters will identify ways that our current service delivery system reinforces racial disparities, placing an emphasis on the need to move toward equity, rather than equality, in the homeless services system. Learn more and sign-up!

Household Food Insecurity Rates in the U in 2022

“In October 2023, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released their report, Household Food Insecurity Rates in the United States in 2022. The results are sobering and show that food insecurity rates have increased significantly. 44.2 million individuals lived in households experiencing food insecurity in 2022. The overall food insecurity rate rose to 12.8%, up from 10.2% in 2021. Food insecurity among households with children also rose, and there continue to be stark racial disparities among households, with American Indian or Alaska Native, Black, Hispanic, or multiracial families experiencing substantially higher food insecurity.

These alarming trends are consistent with the poverty data released in September, which showed poverty rising sharply in 2022 compared to 2021. These trends are likely driven by the end of Pandemic-related policies and programs that helped families put food on the table including the expanded Child Tax Credit and flexibilities that allowed many schools to provide free meals for all students. Despite the enormous upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity remained steady in 2020 (10.5%) and 2021 (10.2%). This data shows us the effectiveness of programs enacted during the pandemic and the consequences of allowing them to expire. Poverty and food insecurity are policy choices.”

Suicide Prevention For Law Enforcement: The Urgent Need For Support

By Gerry Vassar, Lakeside

Most officers are resistant to get the help they need for fear of consequences to their job. Someone who is trauma-impacted is not one who their supervisors want to put on the street with a gun. Also, similar to military personnel, it's a stigma to admit you're struggling. Officers are expected to be tough and bear the tragedies they witness without allowing it to cause any internal reactions. It's just not normal to witness what they do without consequences. “Veterans in this country come from different eras, fought in different battles, used different weaponry and wore different uniforms, but they all share a common experience: the experience of training, moving from place to place, fighting (or training to fight) and living a life that is ever changing. Due to the unique, and sometimes challenging, lifestyle inherent to military life, often our veterans experience mental health challenges such as PTSD, traumatic brain injury or depression. Here are five ways you can help support our veterans. Read more.

Professional Consultation with Dr. Rehman Abdulrehman

Starting in December, Dr. Rehman Abdulrehman is pleased to offer a 4-session small group professional consultation, Anti-Racist Cultural Competence Development: Working With Muslim Clients Experiencing Islamophobia in Times of Heightened Global Conflicts.

Muslims reflect a diverse and unique representative population in many communities. Given the ongoing racial and cultural disparity associated with our colonial culture, along with heightened polarized global conflict, there has also been a spike in anti-Muslim hate crimes and tensions even in everyday work settings. This high-impact education and consulting program is designed to build trust between Muslim and non-Muslim care providers by advancing an accurate understanding of both cultural context and the implications of global conflict on the population's mental health. CTIPP has partnered with the International Transformational Resilience Coalition (ITRC) and other organizations to launch a Community of Practice (CoP) to build public health approaches towards population-level resilience and wellness in the face of climate-related disasters. The CoP will last ten weeks and begin in February 2024. If you want to join, please fill out the application.

Education Law Center

“Pennsylvania’s 15-member Basic Education Funding Commission concluded its 11th and final public hearing on November 16, having heard testimony from a wide range of stakeholders and experts. Now the commission must finish its job – swiftly completing a report and a plan to rectify once and for all the issues identified by the court in its historic February ruling that the state’s funding system is discriminatory and unconstitutional.

ELC and partners have emphasized that the report must include a determination of how much additional money each Pennsylvania district needs to provide a constitutionally compliant education - an adequacy target - and a multiyear plan and timeline for getting each district to that target. In an analysis presented to the commission, Penn State professor Matthew Kelly calculated what those targets should be, based on spending in Pennsylvania’s successful school districts, and determined that public education spending must be increased in total by $6.2 billion, or about 20%. This does not count the additional costs of expanding preschool and repairing Pennsylvania’s school buildings, which must also be addressed. Kelly’s analysis is the only current and comprehensive assessment of the need.” Learn more!
