Response to Coroner's Report

See the College's guidance on wheelchair lap belts

The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario conducts death investigations and inquests to ensure that no death is missed or overlooked. Their findings and recommendations are used to improve public safety and prevent similar deaths in the future. The Coroner's Office shares these reports with regulatory colleges and may request the development of professional guidance for registrants to address the findings in the report.

The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario requested COTO implement a recommendation to prevent future deaths and injuries when prescribing a lap belt for clients.

The Geriatric and Long-Term Care Death Review Committee (GLTCRC) released a report concerning a death where the use of a wheelchair lap belt was a contributing factor. The report made recommendations highlighting the potential dangers of lap belts, the consideration of alternative devices, and to follow facility restraint policies if applicable.

The College Response to the Coroner’s Report: Death Related to Wheelchair Lap Belt is a practice resource intended to alert occupational therapists to those dangers, assist them in identifying risks associated with prescribing lap belts and support their clinical decision-making.

This guidance is available in both English and French.

If you have any questions about this resource, please contact practice@coto.org or 1-800-890-6570/416-214-1177 ext. 240.

Quality Assurance Update

Top 5 professional goals in 2025

Occupational therapists did remarkable things in 2025. See the top 5 competencies occupational therapists selected when setting goals for their Learning Plan in 2025.

Professional Growth in 2025: Learning Plan Goals

  • Learn: Engage in ongoing learning and professional development
  • Contribute: Contribute to the learning of occupational therapists and others
  • Record keeping: Maintain professional documentation
  • Culture, equity & justice: Promote anti-oppressive behaviour and culturally safer, inclusive relationships
  • Manage: Manage the assignment of services to assistants and others

Occupational therapists have indicated this learning translates into changes that deliver better client outcomes, improve client safety, and enhance collaboration.

The 2026 Annual Learning Plan will be available on the COTO Portal in mid-January.

Start your plan by setting your goals early, working on them throughout the year, and recording the impact of your goals by October 31, 2026.

Practice Q&A

Gift Giving

You asked us: Can I accept a gift from my client?

We are resharing this Q&A as a reminder to occupational therapists about gift giving.

With the holiday season upon us, occupational therapists may receive gifts from patients or clients. Although gifts are given with good intentions, they may still unintentionally affect your professional relationships.
