A new blog from Pacific Institute Director of Communications and Outreach, Dr. Amanda Bielawski, and President, Jason Morrison, highlights the significance of how water advanced on the climate agenda at COP27. For the first time, water was visible in the final UN Climate Summit COP declaration. Amanda and Jason unpack this pivotal moment for water in both climate mitigation and adaptation. They further discuss how the transformative change and radical collaboration needed are at the heart of the Pacific Institute’s work.

Salton Sea News: Pacific Institute's Michael Cohen Issues Statement Regarding Imperial Irrigation District’s Approval of Landmark Salton Sea Agreement |
Pacific Institute Senior Associate, Michael Cohen, issued a statement this month regarding the Imperial Irrigation District's approval of a landmark Salton Sea agreement.
"IID’s approval marks a real turning point for the Salton Sea. In addition to the significant federal investment in the shrinking lake, IID and – for the first time – the Coachella Valley Water District commit real water for future projects and commit to provide land access, which has been a huge obstacle for years. In return, California will give the districts much-needed legal protections for this land and the feds will fund efforts to protect public and environmental health."

This week, Pacific Institute Senior Researcher Cora Snyder spoke with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego about a Pacific Institute-led project, “Advancing Water Efficiency for Low-Income Multifamily Housing in Southern California,” helping to reduce water wasted to leaky toilets.
Mayor Gallego, Co-Chair of the 50L Home Coalition, learned about how this multi-family housing project in Los Angeles, CA could be implemented in affordable housing in Phoenix, AZ.
Currently, the project is currently being scaled in Los Angeles and other locations across the United States.

Space Technology to Boost Water Action: Partnership Between Water Resilience Coalition and European Space Agency Calls for Proposals |
|
European Space Agency (ESA) has collaborated with the Pacific Institute's CEO Water Mandate and Water Resilience Coalition (WRC) to launch a call for proposals for digital water resilience monitoring services. Growing the partnership that began at COP26 in 2021, ESA and the WRC are bringing together space technology solutions for water action.
The call is part of a long-term plan to roll out digital water resilience monitoring services that improve the status of 100 priority water-stressed basins by 2030. This partnership will leverage innovative remote sensing technologies to empower action on water around the world. Together, the WRC and ESA seek to catalyze the ability to digitally monitor basin health to support the achievement of net positive water impact.
The project goals are wide in scope but deeply interwoven. Using space and digital technologies to visualize the current baseline of water stress at priority basins and identify large-scale monitoring solutions for the future, the project seeks to monitor basin health, support collective actions, and provide transparency on basin outcomes. The deadline to submit proposals is February 28.

Water Action Hub: Call for Early Supporters |
|
Companies now have access to a new range of water stewardship tools, including a corporate water benchmark tool (CWBT) and a curated solutions library, on the Water Action Hub. The Water Action Hub is a global online platform highlighting more than 1,600 projects and 1,000 organizations building water resilience. The platform is presented by the CEO Water Mandate, a partnership between the Pacific Institute and the UN Global Compact. Updates to the Water Action Hub include:

The Corporate Water Benchmark Tool (CWBT): This tool incorporates two self-assessments that allow businesses to compare their quantitative water performance and qualitative water practices to industry peers. Using the benchmark scores calculated by the CWBT, companies gain actionable insight around specific areas they can target to have the biggest impact on their water practices and performance.

Solutions Library: Based on a user's scores, the integrated solutions library will recommend specific actions from a collection of tools, reports, datasets, and guidance documents to help companies build their water stewardship capacity.
