Rest, Reset and Remember Who You Are!

Hey, Beginning Teachers 💛

As we move into the final stretch before winter break, we want to speak directly to you — our beginning teachers who have poured so much heart, time, and energy into these past few months. You have shown up for your students with passion, creativity, and resilience, even on days when it felt like a lot. We see you, and we are grateful for you.

In these last days before break, we encourage you to prepare not just your lesson plans, classrooms, or materials — but yourself. Set the groundwork now to give your mind permission to truly disconnect. Let winter break be a time where you can turn off the “teacher brain,” even if just for a little while. A time where you don’t have to be “Mr.” or “Ms.” anything — just you.

Because you are worthy of rest.

You deserve moments of joy that don’t require a bell schedule.

You deserve to breathe, laugh, nap, play, read, or simply exist without juggling a to-do list.

You deserve to start the new semester feeling refreshed, grounded, and recharged for both the joys and the challenges ahead.

This winter break, pour back into the person behind the teacher title — the one who has dreams, hobbies, humor, and a life outside the classroom. Give yourself permission to unplug and to reclaim your energy. Another semester will be waiting for you, and it will bring opportunities to grow, celebrate, and make an impact — but right now, your job is to rest.

We believe in you. We are rooting for you. And we can’t wait to support you as you step into the new year with strength and clarity.

You are doing an incredible job. Keep going — but first, take a breath. You’ve earned it.

With appreciation,

Chelsea Davis

Director of Educator Engagement

December Focus: Reflection

December gives beginning teachers a rare moment to pause, look back, and truly see how far they’ve come. This month, we’re centering Reflection — honoring your growth, recognizing your resilience, and giving yourself credit for every step forward.

Reflection isn’t about perfection; it’s about perspective. It’s noticing the moments you were brave, creative, patient, resourceful, or simply determined to keep going. Beginning teachers often overlook their progress, but here’s your reminder: you’ve grown more than you realize.

As winter break approaches, we encourage you to take a breath and reflect on:

✨ What you’re proud of from this semester

✨ The challenges you overcame

✨ The ways your students have grown because of your presence

✨ The teacher you’re becoming

✨ The parts of yourself you want to nurture as you step into the new year

Reflection Space: Looking Back to Move Forward

Use these questions to pause, breathe, and truly honor your journey this semester. Write your responses in a journal, a notes app, or even on a scrap piece of paper — what matters is that you see your growth in your own words.

Your Teaching Journey

  1. What is one moment from this semester that reminded you why you chose to teach?
  2. When did you feel most confident in your role? What helped you feel that way?
  3. What is one small victory you may have overlooked in the moment, but now realize matters?

Your Classroom Flow

  1. Which routines or systems helped your classroom run smoothly?
  2. Which ones caused stress or needed constant attention?
  3. Where did you see your students grow the most — academically, socially, or emotionally?

Your Personal Growth

  1. What did you learn about yourself as an educator?
  2. How did you handle tough days, and what got you through them?
  3. What surprised you about this semester — in a good way?

Your Well-Being

  1. What drained your energy the most?
  2. What filled your cup and helped you stay grounded?
  3. How can you intentionally care for yourself during winter break?

Looking Ahead

  1. What’s one thing you want to refine or strengthen next semester?
  2. What is one boundary you want to protect more clearly?
  3. What is one joy, practice, or habit you want to bring with you into the new year?

Self-Care & Wellness

Because you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Let’s be honest — the first years of teaching are full of highs and lows. Between lesson planning, navigating school routines, and supporting your students, it’s easy to forget the most important part of the equation: taking care of yourself matters, too.

This section is your monthly wellness check-in — short, simple, and created to help you stay grounded while growing.

Quick Self-Check: How Are You Really Doing?

Take a minute to reflect. Answer honestly — no one sees this but you:

  • 😴 Am I getting enough sleep most nights?
  • 🧠 Have I taken even 10 minutes for myself this week?
  • 💬 Am I talking to anyone about how I’m really feeling?
  • 🔁 Am I stuck in “survival mode” or creating a routine that works for me?

If most of your answers are “not really” — that’s okay. Start small. Check out our wellnes tip for this month below.

Self-Care & Wellness Tip: Protect One Space Just for You

Choose one part of your day — your morning coffee, your drive home, your evening routine — and make it a teacher-free zone.

No planning. No replaying the day. No to-do lists.

Just you.

Creating one protected space helps your mind slow down, your body release tension, and your spirit reconnect with who you are outside the classroom.

It’s a small shift that brings big calm — and prepares you to enter winter break truly rested.

How to Make It Happen This Week:

  • Set a Clear Boundary: Choose a specific time or place where you step away from teaching tasks. Let yourself know this is non-negotiable downtime.

  • Turn Off Notifications: Silence emails, messaging apps, and school alerts during this time. Protect your mind from the constant pull of “teacher mode.”

  • Do One Restorative Activity: Use this space for something that fills your cup — reading, walking, journaling, meditating, or listening to music.

  • Communicate Your Space: Let family or housemates know this is your dedicated time. Even a short note like, “I’ll be offline for 20 minutes to recharge,” gives it legitimacy.

💌Ask Chelsea

That’s where Ask Chelsea comes in. Whether you’re wondering how to handle parent emails, set boundaries, survive dismissal duty, or just make it through the week — I’ve got you.

Each month, I’ll answer one real question from a beginning teacher. And yes — you can ask anonymously.
