December Updates from Impact100 DC

From Ann Vaughn, President

December greetings to all of our wonderful members and friends,

As we near the end of the recruitment season for 2024, we're in our final push to make our 2024 grants as impactful as possible! To that end, here are four key messages we're focused on:

1. Please help us reach or surpass this year’s total of $162,000 in grants (one $100,000 and three $20,666 grants). Please renew your membership if you’ve not done so! Please consider neighbors, colleagues, friends, or relatives who might have an interest in funding the critical social justice work we prioritize and in being part of this wonderful community. The clock is ticking toward December 31st – the membership deadline!

2. Many prospective members have asked me this fall what the participation requirements are in joining Impact100 DC. The answer: none!! Members shape their own experiences. Your generous membership contribution – 100% of which funds our grants – is enough. At the same time, we want to make sure that everyone is aware of the multitude of volunteer opportunities that exist (including reviewing grant proposals) — with absolutely no pressure intended for those who want only to donate.

3. Last January, we heard from members that the opportunity to learn about and sign up for Focus Area Committee participation two weeks before the deadline did not give them enough of a heads-up at the start of a busy year. Therefore, we have created an extended sign-up period—from today through January 12th. Please click HERE for all information about participation as well as the sign-up link (only 2024 members are eligible—you can join or renew by 12/31).

4. From all of us on the Impact100 DC Board: A huge thank you for your generous contributions to our high-impact grants program and Happy Holidays to all of our members and friends!

With gratitude,

Ann

Watch Now: Our November

Juvenile Justice Discussion

On November 15, Impact100 DC Board Member Jenny Backus moderated a discussion about juvenile justice in the DMV.

The conversation featured Penelope Spain, co-founder and CEO of Open City Advocates, our 2023 $100,000 grant recipient, as well as Jenny Gathright, criminal justice reporter for WAMU/DCist, our local NPR affiliate.

We highly recommend watching the recording, as they talk about the nuances of recent statistics, the implications of new policies on the table, and some of the key issues on the table for juvenile justice in our metro region.

Impact100 DC Member Gatherings

Every fall, we look for ways to bring more prospective members into the fold—not only so we can expand our impact in the coming year, but also so we can get to know each other more, and take advantage of the brilliant, diverse, engaged community of women that is Impact100 DC.

A huge thank you to everyone who hosted a Meet and Greet event this fall, including Cheryl Hawkins (picture below from her event), Joan de Pontet, Francine Lamoriello, Meagan Van Orden, Jen Burton, and Ranit Schmelzer. It was great to see so many members and friends over the last few months!

Several of us also had the chance to see the Monarch: A Mexican-American Musical, written and co-directed by Impact100 DC member Mayu Molina Lehmann. Congratulations to Mayu on such a wonderful story and production.

Impact100 DC Member Book Club

Weathering: The extraordinary stress of ordinary life in an unjust society by Arline T. Geronimus

We had a lot of interest in the book, so we are rescheduling the November book club meeting to an in-person get-together on January 10th at 6:30 PM to give people a little more time and hopefully have fewer conflicting schedules. If you are interested in attending at this new date please complete this form. Light refreshments will be provided. If you have any questions, please reach out to Meagan Van Orden (mvanorden@impact100dc.org).

Don't forget - You can still use our toolkit to spread the word about Impact100 DC!

If you've already joined or renewed your membership, we invite you to spread the word!

The deadline to become a member and directly increase next year's grants is December 31. Early in the new year, we'll be able to announce the final total of our 2024 grant awards, based on the number of members who have joined.

The more we can do now, the more support we can provide the incredible nonprofits in our region.
