The holidays are here!
That means... SO MANY CARDBOARD BOXES!
We asked members of our PCDA team, and here are some of our favorite ways to play with a big cardboard box:
- Turn it into a shopping cart and set up a ‘sale’ on the couch!
- Flatten it to make a big ramp for toy cars
- Cut skateboard-sized pieces and use masking tape to make "army guy" platforms for your feet!
- Make a boat/ship! Cut out the top or fold in top flaps, color/paint the outside, and tape a small flag/sail to it.
- Drive through car wash for your toy cars and trucks
- A new dollhouse or restaurant for your stuffed animals to visit! (paint/color outside of the box, parent cut out windows)
- Make a "Time Machine” – it can continue into ideas of traveling to different years, places, etc.
- Make a house for your pet.
- Human "Jack in the Box"
- Choo choo train; decorate the outside and use bells and train whistles and sing train-related songs. If you have room, push it down the hallway or around the house.
- Tape together to make a tunnel or a big cave
- Make a ball pit! Or fill up with bubble wrap and/or those air cushion things that come with the giant boxes
- Cut out a hole and tape “curtains” to create a stage for puppet/shadow theater
- A rocket ship: rearrange the flaps for the side tail parts and cut a circle for a window
- A fort/tent: drape some curtains or blankets over it, cut a door to go through
- Create household appliances, like a washing machine, sink, oven, or stove
- Make a storefront, food truck, or restaurant.
- Building a wall or a tall tower for (safe and supervised) crashing and knocking down
- Flatten, then trace your child’s body to create a life-sized cutout!
- Create cribs or a bed
- Pirate theme: turn boxes into a big rock, a pirate ship, and a dark cave to hide the treasure surrounded by water with deadly sharks
- Use multiple boxes to make a neighborhood full of houses and shops!
- Chores: putting things in the box and pushing it (safe and supervised)
- Make holes to practice lacing. Turn it into a giant shoe to practice tying!
- Draw lines to create a race track or parking lot
- Paint a face on a cardboard box and cut out a mouth, then feed it all sorts of things!
- Use large pieces to create a board game or Twister mat!
- Flatten a big box and paint it bright green (or just glue a bunch of bright green sheets of paper on it) to act as a sturdy green screen for zoom calls.
Other fun ideas to pair with books
- create a fish tank or ocean theme to pair with Rainbow Fish or Pout Pout
- create a cave to pair with Going On A Bear Hunt
- make a bus for Wheels on the Bus- Pete the Cat style (He’s cool !)
- build different houses ( straw, sticks, brick) to pair with the Three Little Pigs

Support PCDA Through Your Online Shopping!
|
|
During this time of national emergency, when many households are using online purchasing to help keep their families safe, we wanted to remind you that PCDA receives a charitable donation from Amazon Smile for every purchase made when you create and use an Amazon Smile account, or use your existing Amazon account but make your purchases through the Amazon Smile website. You get the same products, same prices and same service at Amazon Smile as you do on Amazon!
Amazon Smile donates a percentage of your purchase to PDCA when you take these simple steps before shopping:
-
Create an Amazon Smile account or simply log into your existing Amazon account at smile.amazon.com.
- Once you, the customer, signs into your Amazon Smile account, you’ll be prompted to “Support your charitable organization by starting your shopping at smile.amazon.com.”
- You will then be prompted to “Select a charity to start shopping.” Please type in “PCDA” so that your purchase will automatically be eligible for PCDA to receive a percentage of your purchase as a charitable donation.
That’s it! The Amazon Smile platform will take care of the rest. Once you check out, a percentage of your sale will automatically be directed to PCDA. Thanks so much for considering this option when you shop online. We’re very grateful for all support of our mission, and what it means for the children and families we care for.
