HOMEGROWN POETRY
Skye Blaine, Poetry Editor

Rambling One-half Acre
by Skye Blaine

A fixer-upper, they knew that—irresistible
there above the river, the steady burble sifting city life

Buildings ramble on the half-acre lot
home, shop, office, foundry, greenhouse
Piles of renovation materials sprawl too—
not under cover, simply set down here and there
The shop has no clear space
drill press, wallboard, lathe, cozy with
wrenches, wire, lawnmower
Do they breed in there?

He burrows for a crosscut saw
creativity requires chaos, he says

Sitting with Lee
by Leiah Bowden

Good will lined with longing for what was
and
or
what could still be if only
settles on us, companionably couched
on a moist summer evening,
unspoken as we talk
about the laundry, hairy moles on old women,
someone’s braided ear hair
and report each to the other on our day

Your eyes look large behind your reading glasses
And I see your body shake
When your tremoring hand rests behind your head.
But we’ve covered that already

We marvel at the sparrow
Nesting on my front porch wind-chime
Nested as we are,
Arms and legs
Casually touching
On the couch on which
I rarely sit
Alone.
