PLEASE JOIN OR RENEW!
Many of you received our Annual Membership appeal letter in the mail last month. As a reminder—or if you didn’t get the mailing—here’s the appeal letter from Angela:

"Dear Island Community,
Our islands hold many natural wonders. The coastline outshines them all."...
SPRING STREET STUDENTS AT PHELPS PRESERVE | SHARON MASSEY
ALL TUCKED IN
More than a thousand native plants are all tucked in for the season—and just in the nick of time! Volunteers helped us wrap up our last fall planting party merely hours before the heavy rains and floods came...

Read on to see this year's tally of volunteer hours (which is equivalent to two and a half years of full time work) and enjoy a photo gallery of our fall panting parties.
"FENCING" LAND STEWARDS | STAFF ARCHIVE
NEW FENCE =
CLEANER WATER
For years, we’ve been planning to build a fence on Red Mill Farm Preserve that keeps grazing cattle out of False Bay Creek. We’re happy to report that the fence is finally complete, enabling San Juan County to plant some 1,200 trees to create a wooded buffer zone along the creek.
TRUMPETER SWAN, ORCAS ISLAND | SHEILA BOLKA
SWAN COUNT 2022
Each year in mid-January, a great number of volunteers help us document wintering populations of trumpeter and tundra swans throughout the San Juan Islands.

Join us in this community science endeavor! Plus win a prize for entering our photo contest...
CLOSED 'TIL SPRING | STAFF ARCHIVE
WINTER TRAIL CLOSURE
Beginning January 15, the Sylvan Loop Trail at the Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island will be closed for eight weeks. We have decided to let the water flow, the winds blow, and the owls conduct their courtship in private during the depth of winter. Watch for information on a volunteer trail cleanup day before the loop reopens on March 15, just in time to welcome spring!
LEAVE YOUR LEGACY IN THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS
The Gann Society is a group of individuals who have notified us that they have provided for the San Juan Preservation Trust in their estate plans.

Protect these islands for generations to come with a bequest to the San Juan Preservation Trust.

DOUBLE RAINBOW NEAR ZYLSTRA LAKE PRESERVE | MICHAEL NOONAN AND SUSAN LEY
"The sky was perfect that day. Bright sunshine in the foreground, dark ominous clouds in the background, and two spectacular rainbows in between. There were two things that we simply loved in the scene that day. One was the way the two tall poplar trees appear to be leaning into the rainbows. The other was the visible sunbeams streaming perpendicular to the rainbows."
