Marine Exploration Program
The Marine Exploration Program (MEP) was created for Thompson Middle School by Cortney Kingsley, Sail Newport's education program manager. A fall/winter session for 6th, 7th and 8th graders recently wrapped up and students learned to drive a powerboat safely. The instructions included docking, close-quarter maneuvering, navigation, and anchoring.
Also, students had the unique opportunity to tour Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard with Michael Millerick and troubleshoot with sailor Garrett Carlson.
The middle schoolers also learned about RI-specific requirements from the Newport harbormaster and made a land-to-sea connection on the important role of no-wake zones. The students learned that observing no-wake zones helps to minimize coastal erosion and how run-off effects our ocean while at the Ocean Hour Farm.

Sail for Hope Raises $39,938 for Maui Food Bank
Sail For Hope is an annual fundraiser, and charities are selected each year to benefit from regatta proceeds. This year, the Maui Food Bank received $39,938 to help recover from the catastrophic wildfires. Each boat raised funds, sponsors and sailors donated, we collected bar proceeds and sold merchandise and door tickets to add to the donation pool. This event is a tremendous show of the generosity of the sailing community towards those in need. Thank you to our donors, sailors, co-founders and Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard for hosting our social event.

40th Anniversary Newport Regatta
One year after the founding of Sail Newport, the Newport Regatta® was launched as a Shields-only regatta in 1984. The regatta has grown to be an annual multi-class event that is on many sailors' "must-do" list.
We're inviting one-design classes that can recruit ten or more boats to contact us for inclusion in this 40th Anniversary event. Two days of racing (possibly three) in Newport, fantastic parties, music, great food sizzling on the grill, and sailors from all over the U.S. will celebrate this one-design milestone year. Mark your calendar!
