Hepatitis Free Mongolia, Phase 2
Since 2011, FIRE has conducted seven liver screenings in six rural provinces of Mongolia reaching 8,526 people. Each time FIRE implements a project we evaluate, modify, and improve it for the next implementation, increasing reach and impact. What started as screening a few hundred health care workers has now grown into a comprehensive program, aiming to reach everyone in a single province in 2021 - Sukhbaatar - thereby eliminating hepatitis C across that province.

"Hepatitis Free Mongolia, Phase 2," builds upon Phase 1 by further developing the Hepatitis Coordinator position to include detailed responsibilities and expectations that include utilizing the government's extensive registration and social service networks to locate everyone in the province who is untested or tested positive and untreated.

It also includes paying the insurance premiums for everyone who is uninsured and tests positive for any liver issue so they can access treatment. This includes free, 3-month curative treatment for hepatitis C and free or supplemented treatment for all health care needs. One full year of insurance premiums through the National Insurance Fund of Mongolia is $19.50 per person, and yet it is out of reach for so many.

We feel that these additions will enable us to eliminate hepatitis C in Sukhbaatar province with a "proof-of-concept" model that can be replicated across Mongolia as well as communities around the world. Once completed, it will be the first time hepatitis C will be eliminated across an entire region anywhere in the world.

Hepatitis Coordinators
Trained Hepatitis Coordinators in Dornod province.
FIRE developed the Mongolia's first "Hepatitis Coordinator" role and training  program with the support of Saga University based on their model that was supported by the Ministry of Health in Japan and adopted countrywide, contributing to the successful elimination of viral hepatitis in Japan. FIRE trained one hundred sixty-eight social workers and health care workers in two provinces during 2018 and 2019. These Hepatitis Coordinators will distribute and share information about the healthy liver program and viral hepatitis testing, and educate community members one-on-one about receiving the necessary testing and treatment - while conducting their everyday duties.

This Hepatitis Coordinator program has been specifically designed for immediate disease prevention and management. This system could also be used to quickly disseminate information, testing, treatment, and vaccinations throughout a community for other health issues including Covid-19.
ALL Donations Matched until 1/31/2021!!
All donations received by January 31, 2021 will be matched up to $20,000 and applied to "Hepatitis Free Mongolia, Phase 2," program shortfall. The project has received funding from Rotary Foundation for the program expenses in Mongolia. However, we are still trying to raise $100,000 through donations and grants to cover FIRE staff in Mongolia to implement the program, as well as a shortfall in coverage to insurance premiums for uninsured Mongolians in Sukhbaatar.

We greatly appreciate your consideration and support for this revolutionary project and taking Mongolia one step closer to the complete elimination of hepatitis.
