From Mr. Wilfrid
Dear Families,

There has been an ongoing dialogue about the morning supervision we've been offering thus far and it's sustainability. Most of that dialogue has happened on Facebook, but I wanted to make sure to communicate it in other places, too.

We've been offering free supervision of children starting at 7:50 this year, but a combination of the number of students, the relatively few available staff, and the budgetary pressures makes this likely unsustainable in the future.

Most other schools open their doors at 8:25 for breakfast, but we know that there are many families who need to get to work and greatly value the ability to drop off students early.

We're asking for ideas for solutions, volunteers to supervise (from 7:45 - 8:40), or any other contributions to ensure kids have a place to go so parents can get to work.

The PTO meeting on December 10 from 6:00 - 7:30 will be mostly focused on this topic.

We hope to see you there!
Recess during winter months
All students are expected to go outdoors for recess except during inclement weather such as pouring rain or when temperatures and wind chills dip below zero. There are many benefits to being active including: Improved physical health and fitness, grow stronger and to help maintain body weight.
Outside air also aids in refreshing the mind to continue learning for the afternoon. Children playing outdoors tend to feel happier and show more self-confidence. Children really do enjoy having time to have fun playing with friends. Children do not get colds from the cold weather.

If your child requires indoor recess due to a specific health condition a medical note from the child’s healthcare provider is required. The note needs to include the student’s name, the reason for indoor recess (i.e. asthma, fractured bone, etc.), the parameters for indoor recess including the length of time this needs to be in effect (i.e. when temperature below 32 degrees, for the next 6 weeks, until further notice, etc.). If you have any questions regarding outdoor safety of your child for medical reasons, please contact our school nurse, Abby Dunning at (608) 442-2951
After School Back-Up Plans?
What would happen if your child got off the bus and no one was there to greet him/her? Would your child know what to do? Where would you want your child to go? Do you have a backup plan?  We strongly encourage parents to develop safety plans with their children.  Here are some things to think about:

• how your child can get into your house or apartment
• how parent(s) or caregivers can be reached
• where to go if parent(s) are not home
• other children who get off at your child’s bus stop
• whether your child knows how to cross streets safely
• whether your child knows how to walk home

Everyone knows how scary it is when a young child is lost, even for a few minutes. Having safety plans helps empowers your child and helps everyone to have a better sense of safety. Here is   safety information for children.
Volunteer Opportunities

Parents, guardians, family and community members are great additions to the school community. As a volunteer, reading with students, being a part of a classroom or attending field trips, motoring in hallways are just a few ways to get involved. Please remember to sign up using the   Volunteer Tracker , If you require  additional assistance  or need access to a computer, please stop by the main office or contact us at (608) 204-7940

Stay Healthy During Flu Season

Some ways to stay healthy and to protect yourself and those around you from getting the flu include: Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based waterless hand sanitizer. Cover your cough or sneeze with your upper sleeve. If you use a tissue, throw it away after one use. Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces such as door knobs, refrigerator handle, telephone, or water faucets. Avoid being exposed to people who are sick with flu-like symptoms. Stay home when you are sick. Eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest and do not smoke. Use your own drinking cups and straws. Talk with your doctor about getting the influenza vaccine. For those without insurance or a  Medical Assistance / Forward card,   Public Health Madison & Dane County (PHMDC) can help. Call (608) 266-4821 for more information or to set up an appointment for free flu shot.
Visit the Dream Bus  at Sandburg

At the Dream Bus, you can get a library card, browse and check out materials, return items, place and pick up holds, and use the free WiFi.
Every other Thursday (December 12, December 26) from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Feed your brain during the break.

While we are in a break from school, be sure that you don't give your brain a break from good reading. If you've always wanted to know how things work, you can check out a non-fiction book from the school library. You can also feed your brain by rereading your favorite books at home, or perhaps by reading the first book of a series you've always wanted to try.

Please consider donating to the   101 Dalmations Musical.  We are in need of a sound system and other materials (costumes, set design) for the performance.

Please consider donating to our fundraiser for a  Reflex Math subscription . Reflex teaches kids math facts through an engaging game-based interface. Knowing math facts with automaticity enables kids to access more challenging math more easily, and Reflex is available to do both at home and school.
Disney Musical
We are very excited to announce that the Disney program is returning! This year our production will be  101 Dalmatians.
This program is an after school program that is available for third, fourth and fifth grade students. The program will start in January and will run through May. If you have any questions, you can ask  Mrs. Cass  or  Ms. Unger .
